Sarah Fogg, a Central Dauphin High School art teacher, recently transformed a section of Lincoln Financial Field into a tribute to cancer awareness and her late mother. The Philadelphia Eagles commissioned Fogg to design a mural for the NFL’s Crucial Catch game after her previous public artwork caught the team’s attention, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The project represents a convergence of professional art and personal grief. For Fogg, the opportunity wasn’t just a high-profile commission; it was a way to honor her mother, a nurse and dedicated advocate for the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation who passed away in 2020. The mural serves as a marker of that legacy within one of the city’s most visible sporting landmarks.
A wing wall for cancer awareness
Fogg utilized a style known as a “wing wall,” creating a large-scale piece where the feathers are designed to symbolize the support systems surrounding those fighting illness. By incorporating a spectrum of colors around the perimeter, she represented the various ribbons associated with different types of cancer, expanding the scope of the piece to be inclusive of all survivors and patients.
This approach mirrors Fogg’s 2024 work in Old City, where she collaborated with the Sandy Rollman Foundation to paint a butterfly mural. In that piece, the wings held the names of individuals affected by ovarian cancer, establishing a pattern of using public art to provide visibility to medical struggles that often happen behind closed doors.
“The feathers can represent sort of the support system around someone who might be going through tough times, so it’s almost a physical representation of that network that you get,” Fogg said.
The logistics of a stadium deadline
The timeline for the project was aggressive. The mural had to be completed in time for the Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, leaving Fogg with only a few days to execute the design on a massive scale. To meet the deadline, she recruited her sister, Julie, who flew in from Florida to assist with the painting.
While Fogg joked that her sister isn’t particularly gifted in art, the collaboration added a layer of emotional significance to the work. The sisters’ presence at the stadium together marked the first time they had attended a game since the last time they went with their mother.
The civic impact of the Crucial Catch initiative
The NFL’s Crucial Catch campaign is designed to encourage early detection and risk reduction for various cancers.
The effectiveness of such initiatives is often seen in the immediate reaction of the public; Fogg noted that the success of the project became evident on game day as fans lined up to take photos in front of the mural.
For Fogg, the project was a manifestation of her identity as both an educator and a helper, using her professional skills to provide a service to the community.
The mural stands as a reminder of the enduring influence of the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation and the personal networks created by those who fight the disease. It transforms a concrete wall into a space for memory and advocacy, ensuring that the legacy of a nurse and Eagles fan continues to be seen by thousands of visitors.
