Frankfort vs. Independence: Win Streak Meets Stout Defense

The Class AA No. 1 Frankfort Falcons enter Friday night’s matchup against the No. 6 Independence Patriots. With 36 straight victories, Frankfort holds the longest win streak of any West Virginia high school football program by a wide margin. To keep that number climbing, the 8-0 Falcons must beat a Patriots team that has spent much of its season as a road warrior, WV MetroNews reported.

Frankfort is chasing its third consecutive unbeaten regular season and a third straight state championship. Independence, sitting at 5-2, arrives with a quirky schedule that has forced them to play seven of their nine regular-season games away from home. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday and will be featured as the MetroNews Television Game of the Week.

The Wing-T vs. the Versatile Air Attack

Frankfort’s dominance is built on a run-heavy Wing-T offense. They don’t rely on a single superstar; instead, they distribute the load. Six different ball-carriers have surpassed 165 rushing yards this season, with three of them landing between 371 and 586 yards. Braydn Tyler is the engine of this attack, leading the team with 586 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Even quarterback Austin Twigg is a threat on the ground, evidenced by a 62-yard touchdown run against the White Falcons.

But the Falcons are facing a sudden depth crisis. An early injury to Cole Shanholtz during last week’s victory over Class A No. 1 Wahama could leave Frankfort with less depth than usual in their backfield.

Independence plans to counter this with a more balanced, multi-dimensional approach. Quarterback Brock Green is the centerpiece, but he has a diverse set of tools to work with. Tailback Paxton Myers is a dual-threat weapon, heavily involved as a runner and a receiver, while wideouts KJ Viars and Carson Treadway provide reliable targets downfield. For the Patriots, the goal is simple: force Frankfort to defend the entire field. If Green can distribute the ball effectively, the Falcons won’t be able to key in on a single player.

The Battle for Field Position and the Trenches

The scoreboard tells a story of offensive efficiency. Frankfort has been an absolute juggernaut, failing to score fewer than 31 points in any single game this season. For Independence to pull off an upset, they have to change the geometry of the game. They cannot afford to give Frankfort a short field, nor can they allow the Falcons to dictate the tempo through superior field position.

Veteran Frankfort coach Kevin Whiteman has spent years drilling a singular truth into his players: the game is won or lost in the trenches. If the Falcons’ offensive line can dominate the point of attack, the Wing-T becomes unstoppable. However, Independence has proven they can hold their own against elite in-state competition. In five matchups against West Virginia teams, the Patriots have surrendered only 56 points, including two shutouts.

There is also the “rest factor” to consider. While Frankfort has been grinding through a high-stakes schedule, Independence has had a significant break. Having last played on October 17, the Patriots enter Friday with an advantage in preparation and physical recovery that could prove decisive in the fourth quarter.

The stakes here extend beyond the win-loss column. For Frankfort, a loss would be an interruption of the longest win streak in the state and a signal that the Falcons are vulnerable. For Independence, a road victory against the No. 1 team in the class would be a statement of intent heading into the postseason.

The game comes down to whether Independence’s rested defense can stifle a run-dominant attack, or if Frankfort’s depth issues in the backfield provide the opening the Patriots need to break the longest streak in the state.
