Emergency crews search Susquehanna River after 18-year-old boater’s capsized vessel found near Garrett Island
Emergency rescue teams are actively searching the Susquehanna River for an 18-year-old Maryland man after his 10-foot aluminum jon boat was discovered capsized near Garrett Island.
The Maryland Natural Resources Police identified the missing boater as Mark Everett Coates III of Havre de Grace. Officers were dispatched to the area on Thursday morning following the discovery of the overturned watercraft. Investigators established that Coates was last known to be operating the boat near the Hatem Memorial Bridge, which carries U.S. Route 40, at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday. He had initially launched his vessel from the Water Street Boat Ramp in Havre de Grace.

Authorities Urge Boaters to Avoid Search Area
Authorities have urged commercial boaters, recreational watercraft operators, and members of the public to stay completely clear of the search perimeter. Officials specifically requested that boaters avoid the Susquehanna River between the U.S. 40 and Interstate 95 bridges, as well as the Water Street Boat Ramp, while active recovery and rescue operations continue.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed related boating activity or who possesses information regarding Coates’ whereabouts to contact the Maryland Natural Resources Police directly at 410-260-8888.
