The Seattle Kraken have officially parted ways with former fourth-overall pick Shane Wright, trading the young center to the Nashville Predators in a one-for-one deal for fellow former first-round selection Matthew Wood, as first reported by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman and confirmed by Darren Dreger.
A Fresh Start in Nashville for Wright
For Wright, the move brings a definitive end to a Seattle tenure that never quite matched the high expectations set on the draft floor in 2022. Selected fourth overall by the Kraken, the 22-year-old center was envisioned as a franchise cornerstone down the middle. Wright requested a trade away from Seattle this summer.
Across 14 games this season, Wright has recorded three goals and one assist. In total, he has collected 82 points and a plus-15 rating across 183 career NHL appearances. In Nashville, head coach Andrew Brunette will inherit a young center carrying an $886,666 cap hit who desperately needs a change of scenery to unlock his offensive potential.
Seattle Secures Size with Wood
Coming back to the Pacific Northwest is Matthew Wood, a 6-foot-4 winger drafted 15th overall by Nashville in 2023. Wood arrives in Seattle carrying a $950,000 cap hit and looking to break out after a limited role with the Predators. Over 91 career games, the 21-year-old winger has registered 18 goals and 34 points, including one goal and two assists this season.

The trade economics favor both front offices. Both players are approaching the final stretch of their entry-level contracts and will become restricted free agents at the end of the season. Neither club takes on significant financial pressure, making the swap a calculated gamble on upside rather than a financial commitment.
Both teams acted early rather than letting mounting pressure dictate their rosters. Seattle entered the week with an 8-5-1 record, while Nashville sat at 5-4-5. For both Wright and Wood, the new sweaters bring immediate pressure to prove they belong in larger everyday roles.
