Semyon Varlamov gets win as Islanders edge Predators in shootout

Semyon Varlamov secured a victory stopping shots as the New York Islanders edged the Nashville Predators in a shootout. According to official NHL.com reporting, the 38-year-old goaltender’s return to the crease follows a rigorous multi-year rehabilitation process that included partial replacements for both of his knees.

The Long Road Back to the Crease

Before breaking through in the shootout win, Varlamov held a 0-1-2 record over his past three starts this season. The physical toll of his surgeries required a conditioning stint at the end of last campaign with Bridgeport of the American Hockey League, where he posted a .939 save percentage across two appearances and allowed a total of three goals.

“It’s an amazing feeling.”

“I’m very thankful for this opportunity. I just want to thank everybody who was involved in my rehab, the surgery and everything. I’m very, very proud of everybody,” Varlamov said.

The Islanders improved to 6-4-2 on the season, moving to 2-1-1 over their past four games behind a balanced offensive attack. Brayden Schenn reached a major career milestone by netting his 300th NHL goal, while teammates Anthony Duclair and Bo Horvat also tallied goals in regulation.

When the contest extended past overtime, Kyle Palmieri and Bo Horvat converted their attempts in the shootout to seal the two points for New York.
