During his return to Saturday Night Live, comedian Shane Gillis accidentally dropped an unscripted F-bomb during a Dr. Seuss sketch. The live slip led to social media mutes, in-skit call-backs from costar Mikey Day, and a direct apology from Gillis during the episode’s closing curtain call.
Shane Gillis made his third hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live alongside musical guest Rosalía, returning to Studio 8H following prior hosting stints in 2024 and 2025. The milestone episode quickly took an unplanned turn during a sketch parodying classic children’s literature, catching both the studio audience and the cast off guard.
Shane Gillis Veers off Script During Sketch
The moment occurred during a sketch built around Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham. Andrew Dismukes appeared as Sam-I-Am, relentlessly pressuring an older character played by Mikey Day to eat the titular dish. Gillis played Zackary, the character’s aggressively protective son, who steps in to halt the interrogation.
While cutting off Dismukes’s character, Gillis veered off script and delivered a blunt refusal. The 38-year-old comedian caught himself mid-line, immediately covering his mouth and letting out a “Jeez!” before substituting a cleaner word.

“Bro, it’s a non-starter. He said he doesn’t f*cking — Jeez! — like ’em.”

Audience members let out small gasps and laughs at the sudden slip, while Sam-I-Am momentarily broke character and grinned. Rather than ignoring the flub, Mikey Day incorporated the error back into the narrative as the sketch continued. Later in the scene, Day’s character ordered Gillis to leave the house, declaring “You’re a loser, and you said a bad word!” to which Gillis responded, Yes I did.
At the very end of the sketch, Gillis added a quick “sorry about earlier.”
Broadcasting Response and Final Apology
While television censors did not catch the profanity during the live broadcast and network stream, the audio remained audible for viewers watching the recorded show on Peacock. When NBC uploaded the sketch to social media later that evening, producers muted the specific expletive.
Gillis addressed the mishap directly during the episode’s final curtain call.
“And sorry about earlier.”
Shane Gillis, Host
The unscripted drop adds another chapter to Gillis’ complicated history with the sketch comedy series. NBC originally announced him as a new cast member alongside Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang in September 2019, but let him go five days later after past podcast clips surfaced featuring racist remarks and anti-gay slurs. SNL creator Lorne Michaels later stated in an interview that he had been forced to let Gillis go, noting that the decision was very strong from the people in charge and that while he was not on that side, he understood it. Gillis has since built a successful career away from the show through stand-up specials, a popular podcast, starring in the Netflix series Tires, and appearing in the upcoming biopic Madden before returning to host Studio 8H three times.

The live television blunder places Gillis in a long line of performers who have let the F-bomb slip during their appearances on the sketch comedy series over the years, joining past figures such as Paul Shaffer, Jenny Slate, Kristen Stewart, and Sam Rockwell.
