St. Mary’s College of Maryland has postponed its campus bookstore kickoff meetings scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28, as the institution and Barnes & Noble continue to negotiate the final terms of their transition agreement. The cancellation halts the immediate implementation planning phase, leaving the campus community in a holding pattern while administrators work to close the deal.
This delay is the latest friction point in a shift from an internally managed bookstore to a corporate partnership.
Contract disputes delay the kickoff
In a recent announcement posted to the Campus Bookstore Transition webpage, Marcy McKinney, Executive Director of Auxiliary Services, confirmed that all meetings set for Oct. 28 are canceled. The administration stated that completing the contractual work is a prerequisite for moving forward with implementation planning. While the college has expressed a commitment to providing feedback opportunities for students and staff, no new dates have been set.
This sudden pause follows a September 10 update from McKinney, which had previously suggested the college was “finalizing” the contract and preparing to enter the planning phase.
The financial drain on institutional resources
The move to Barnes & Noble was the result of a systemic financial failure. In a detailed message from June 26, 2026, Rhonda Phillips revealed that the campus bookstore has suffered significant operating losses for several years. Because the bookstore is an auxiliary enterprise, it is expected to be self-supporting.

When an auxiliary service loses money, those losses must be covered by other institutional resources. In plain terms, money that could have gone toward academic programs or student services was instead being used to plug the holes in the bookstore’s budget. The Board of Trustees recommended the transition after a formal Request for Proposal and a review by a cross-functional team to ensure the bookstore’s long-term sustainability.
“As stewards of the College, we have a responsibility to carefully evaluate how resources are used and to make decisions that position the institution for long-term success.”
Campus spaces provide vital community connection
President Phillips acknowledged that the bookstore and the Daily Grind are “woven into the fabric of the St. Mary’s experience,” serving as vital hubs for friendship and community. Students, alumni, and others have expressed concern and shared feedback regarding the recommendation to transition Campus Bookstore operations to Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, particularly regarding the community and connection these spaces provide.
Phased rollout begins in March 2027
Despite the current delays in planning meetings, the overarching goal remains a phased rollout. The college intends to begin the actual transition of bookstore and café operations during Spring Break in March 2027.
The intended sequence of events, as outlined by the administration, was as follows:
- June 2026: Board of Trustees recommends the transition to Barnes & Noble.
- September 2026: Administration announces the contract is being finalized.
- October 2026: Planned kickoff meetings (currently postponed).
- March 2027: Phased implementation begins during Spring Break.
SMCM removes bookstore deficit from ledger
By shifting the risk to Barnes & Noble, SMCM removes the bookstore’s deficit from its own ledger.
Questions remaining for the SMCM community
When will the rescheduled kickoff meetings occur?
The college has not yet provided new dates, stating only that they will share information as plans are confirmed.
Will the Daily Grind change its menu or pricing under new management?
The administration has stated a priority to preserve the traditions of the space, but specific operational details for the café are tied to the contract currently being finalized.
