Spider-Man: Brand New Day Dominates Box Office in Fourth Weekend

Sony’s Marvel blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected $39 million in its fourth weekend at the box office, maintaining the top spot domestically with $855 million in Stateside revenues and $2.22 billion globally, as new challengers like horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further opened behind it.

The web is holding firm at the North American box office. While a handful of high-profile newcomers arrived in theaters to test the superhero juggernaut, Sony Pictures managed to claim both of the top two domestic slots.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Chases All-Time Domestic Records

Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues an unstoppable theatrical run in its fourth weekend. The film’s domestic cume reached $854.9 million through Sunday, allowing it to surpass 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home to claim the No. 3 spot for the highest-grossing films ever in North America. This also puts Brand New Day as Sony’s highest-grossing domestic film after it set the record last weekend for the top global release in the studio’s history. Additionally, Brand New Day becomes the No. 6 release of all time at the worldwide box office with $2.22 billion, surpassing 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, which moves to seventh on the chart with $2.07 billion. The latest Spidey film is now just behind Titanic at No. 5 with $2.26 billion and Ne Zha 2 at No. 4 with $2.27 billion.

Industry analysts project the blockbuster will eventually overtake Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens as the biggest movie ever at the domestic box office, and could even be the first to clear $1 billion in North America. Meanwhile, Brand New Day is the third-highest grossing movie in history in terms of worldwide grosses, behind just 2009’s Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion) and ahead of 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion).

Insidious: Out of the Further Debuts in Second Place

Landing in second place is Insidious: Out of the Further, which pulled in $25.3 million from 3,303 North American theaters during its opening weekend (also cited in some materials as 3,330 North American theaters). The sixth installment in the horror franchise that hails from Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films and Blumhouse Atomic Monster also earned $35 million internationally, bringing its global start to $60 million.

The supernatural sequel cost $18 million to produce, meaning its financial prospects remain secure despite opening below the franchise’s prior entry, 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, which debuted to $33 million domestically before grossing $189 million worldwide throughout its run. The franchise revolves around a purgatorial place inhabited by the tortured spirits of the dead, and it’s been commercially successful for Sony and Blumhouse, with the five prior installments having generated a combined $800 million worldwide against low budgets. While the 2013 sequel Insidious: Chapter 2 maintains the record for the biggest debut in the franchise with $40 million, The Red Door ranks as the highest-grossing installment to date with $189 million worldwide.

The film earned a C+ CinemaScore from audiences, tying 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door for the series’ lowest grade, alongside a 57 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70 percent audience score (with other tracking noting a 65 percent approval rating). Critic Frank Scheck wrote in his review for The Hollywood Reporter that the film proves routine in its elaborate plot machinations. Written and directed by Jacob Chase, the project features a cast led by Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Lin Shaye, and centers on a young mother who can bring spirits back with her to the real world. It follows The Red Door, which saw the return of original series stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. Without major studio horror releases for the next four weeks, Out of the Further aims to extend its run with limited competition.

Jason Statham’s Mutiny Faces Soft Box Office Launch

Also opening this weekend is Lionsgate’s action-thriller Mutiny, starring Jason Statham as a former Marine who is framed for murder and sets out to prove his innocence. Directed by Jean-François Richet, the film picks up $7.5 million for the weekend in roughly 2,700 North American locations (also noted as 2,703 North American screens). The project carries a $40 million production budget and holds a 49 percent Rotten Tomatoes approval score. Statham’s recent theatrical outings have delivered mixed openings, with Shelter debuting to $5.5 million domestically earlier this year, while 2025’s A Working Man opened with $15.5 million in North America, and the actor is also set to lead The Beekeeper 2 next year. Lower down on box office charts alongside Mutiny was Black Bear’s comedy Spa Weekend, led by Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau, while other theatrical releases included Andrew Garfield’s The Magic Faraway Tree.
