St. Paul Police Investigate Fatal Shooting in Dayton’s Bluff Neighborhood

A fatal shooting in St. Paul’s Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood turned into a chaotic scene Friday morning when a driver, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, crashed his vehicle into a tree on Mounds Boulevard. The incident occurred just after 7 a.m., drawing emergency responders to a stretch of road near Wic̣aḣapi—also known as Indian Mounds Regional Park—between Bates and Burns avenues.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that dispatchers had received multiple 911 calls regarding a two-vehicle collision in the 900 block of Mounds Boulevard. When officers arrived, they discovered the driver of one of the vehicles had been shot. Despite the presence of a second vehicle at the crash site, police stated there is currently no indication that the other driver was involved in the shooting.

Gunfire Reports and Police Investigation

Sgt. Steve Lentsch of the St. Paul Police Department confirmed that authorities believe the victim was shot in the general vicinity of the crash. Dispatchers had logged reports of possible gunfire in the area earlier that same morning, a detail that now serves as a primary focus for investigators attempting to piece together the sequence of events.

“We had a few calls that reported that,” Sgt. Lentsch said regarding the earlier reports of gunfire.

The St. Paul Police Department’s homicide unit is currently leading the investigation. Officials are urging anyone with information to contact the department at 651-266-5650. As of Friday afternoon, a medical examiner was scheduled to conduct an autopsy to confirm the victim’s identity and official cause of death.

Rising Homicide Statistics in St. Paul

This incident marks the 16th homicide in St. Paul for the 2026 calendar year. For context, the city had recorded 11 homicides at this same point in 2025. This uptick in violence remains a point of concern for residents and local officials as the year enters its final two months.

The intersection of public safety and traffic-related emergencies like this one often complicates initial police responses. While the investigation remains open, the immediate priority for detectives is determining the timeline between the reported sounds of gunfire and the 7 a.m. crash. The area surrounding Mounds Boulevard and the nearby regional park is generally quiet, making the early morning violence particularly disruptive to the local community.
