State Rep. Anne Hughes Arrested After Stolen Signs Found on Property

State Representative Anne Hughes was arrested on Friday after local police located several stolen political signs on property owned by the lawmaker, according to police.

The investigation began when the Easton Police Department received a formal complaint from the Darrell Harris campaign staff. Staffers reported that multiple political signs had vanished from public right-of-ways along Route 59 and Judd Road. Investigators utilized an Apple AirTag embedded in one of the missing signs, tracking its digital signal directly to land owned by Hughes.

Following the GPS data, Easton police conducted a follow-up inquiry that prompted Hughes to return several seized signs, including the tracking device unit. Officers established probable cause and issued the Democratic state representative a misdemeanor summons for sixth-degree larceny.

Public Apology and Campaign Fallout

Hours after the summons was issued, Hughes released an apology via her official Facebook account, acknowledging her role in the incident and taking responsibility for removing the campaign materials.

Yesterday I removed lawn signs that shouldn’t have been on public property. I apologize for removing them rather than contacting the police or my opponent’s campaign to remove them, and I take full responsibility and accountability for my actions. Campaigns should be about issues and differences of ideas, not yard signs. I apologize for the distraction, and am committed to having civil discourse with my opponent for the duration of this campaign season.

The fallout across local party organizations was immediate. The Easton Republican Town Committee issued a scathing public critique, questioning the representative’s judgment and demanding accountability beyond a simple digital apology.

The Easton Police Department’s press release concerning Representative Anne Hughes raises serious questions about judgment, integrity, and accountability. This is not simply about stolen campaign signs. It is about respect for the law and the democratic process. We acknowledge Representative Hughes’ apology, but an apology does not diminish the seriousness of the incident or the consequences that may follow. Equally troubling is the suggestion that this matter is a distraction from the issues. This IS an issue. Character matters. Judgment matters. And elected officials should be held to a higher standard, not excused from it. This is not about Republican versus Democrat. It is about right versus wrong. The people of Easton deserve elected officials who demonstrate the integrity they promise on the campaign trail. Public trust is earned through actions, not apologies. Easton Republican Town Committee

Meanwhile, the Easton Democratic Town Committee released a separate statement distancing local party members from the representative’s actions while acknowledging her decision to take personal responsibility for the misdemeanor offense.

The Easton Democratic Town Committee does not condone Representative Anne Hughes’ actions. Removing campaign signs, for any reason, is not how we resolve disagreements in our community, and it is not the standard we expect from our elected officials or from ourselves. We appreciate Rep. Hughes taking responsibility, and we trust the legal process to proceed fairly. As we head into the final days of this election, we ask everyone to respect every candidate’s right to be seen and heard. If you see a sign you believe is placed illegally, please report it to the Easton Police Department or to the campaign it belongs to.

Broader Political Repercussions and Ongoing Proceedings

State-level Republican leadership quickly seized on the arrest, accusing the incumbent lawmaker of operating under the assumption that elected officials are exempt from local ordinances and state statutes. State Democratic leadership has not yet issued a public response or comment regarding the ongoing misdemeanor case.

As the legal process moves forward in the final days of the current election cycle, the Easton Police Department confirms that the investigation remains actively open. Voters throughout the district face a starkly divided local landscape as questions of candidate ethics and adherence to property laws take center stage just ahead of election day.
