Stevie Wonder performs Songs in the Key of Life Tour at 3Arena

Stevie Wonder brought his Songs in the Key of Life 50th Anniversary Tour to Dublin’s 3Arena, performing the iconic double album in its entirety to a sold-out crowd despite sky-high ticket prices. The 76-year-old musical genius opened the night with a spoken introduction asking everyone to close their eyes to see the world as he does, before leading a massive ensemble through the expansive 21-song, 104-minute studio record.

Musical Scale and Ensemble Virtuosity

Wonder’s massive backing troupe included three percussionists, two guitarists, full horn and string sections, a phalanx of backing singers, and bassist Nathan Watts, who played on the original album. One percussionist demonstrated virtuosic skill armed only with a tambourine and triangle, while sound engineers ensured every note of the soulful symphony remained clearly audible.

Early highlights included Wonder’s fully opened voice on “Sir Duke” with its spectacular brass breakdown, followed by Watts leading the crowd into a joyous “I Wish”. The vast tracklist delivered multiple standout moments, including the melody of “Knocks Me Off My Feet” driven toward a glorious key change by combined strings and brass, and the horns and melodica gathering around Wonder’s chromatic harmonica for the instrumental “Easy Goin’ Evening (My Mama’s Call)”.

Unforgettable Surprises and Extended Finale

The concert featured several unexpected turns, such as Wonder’s harmonica slipping into Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”, an unexpected violin solo finishing the stately “Joy Inside My Tears”, and harpist Brandee Younger stepping up to accompany him on “If It’s Magic”. Wonder also casually performed a solo on a harpejji, described as a tiny cross between a piano and a guitar.

There was no flagging toward the end as a fantastic rendition of “As” prompted some of Wonder’s best singing of the night. Afterward, joking about running over time, he closed the event with both “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” and “Superstition”. Throughout the evening, Wonder appeared to enjoy himself immensely, declaring his love, giving the audience a singing lesson, and mentioning some possible Irish blood in his background.
