Stockstill expresses confidence in FSU quarterback Ashton Daniels

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State interim head coach Rick Stockstill expressed confidence in quarterback Ashton Daniels, who is being counted on as a stabilizing presence after coach Mike Norvell’s dismissal. I got a lot of confidence in Ashton, Stockstill said, noting that the team might have put too much on Daniels’ plate. Sometimes I think we put too much on his plate, and we don’t give him the opportunity to play free.

Daniels’ Inconsistent Season

Daniels’ performance has mirrored Florida State’s turbulent season, marked by both highs and lows. He has 12 rushing touchdowns, including five in a home win over Virginia and four in a double overtime loss at Miami. However, he has also struggled with interceptions, leading the ACC with 11, including three each against Alabama and Clemson. His arm talent and field vision have been questioned alongside his ability to force passes, which has contributed to turnovers.

Harris Jr. Calling Plays for FSU

With offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. now calling plays, Stockstill hinted at subtle changes to the offense as FSU (3-5, 1-4 ACC) prepares to face Boston College (4-4, 2-3) on Saturday at noon (ACC Network). Harris Jr. hasn’t called plays since 2024 when he was on UCF’s staff. Stockstill emphasized the need to avoid overloading Daniels, praising his deep-ball accuracy and mobility, particularly his ability to throw outside the pocket and run effectively.

FSU Faces Key Injuries

The Seminoles are shorthanded for the road game, missing top receiver Duce Robinson with a season-ending knee injury. Running backs Ousmane Kromah and Samuel Singleton Jr. are also out, leaving freshman Amari Thomas as the primary option. Daniels, as the team’s top healthy runner, may carry more of the offensive load. FSU will also be without defensive linemen Deante McCray and Kevin Wynn, with running back Tre’ Wisner and safety K.J. Kirkland questionable for the matchup.
