SUU BioHive to hold biotechnology Bio-hackathon on Nov. 19

Biotechnology is stepping out of the traditional textbook and onto the campus of Southern Utah University. The university’s student-led BioHive chapter is opening its membership ranks to students from a variety of STEM majors or backgrounds, aiming to bridge the gap between classroom theory and the fast-growing life sciences industry.

That local student group serves as a direct pipeline to a much larger professional network across the state, giving participants an inside track on industry events and career development. SUU biology professor Dr. Tyson Edwards emphasized that membership offers immediate practical advantages for students looking for work.

A real advantage of membership in the SUU BioHive Chapter is that it connects students to the larger parent organization, said SUU biology professor Dr. Tyson Edwards. BioHive provides high-quality events at biotech companies across Utah, and scaffolds networking and career services for our students.

The November 19 Bio-Hackathon

The chapter’s next major test of collaboration and ingenuity arrives later this month. SUU BioHive is hosting its upcoming Bio-Hackathon on Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. inside Room 114 of the Science Building.

In this team-based competition, students work together to craft creative answers to practical biotechnology problems within a designated topic. Participants will pitch their final concepts to a panel of judges, competing on metrics of creativity, impact, biotechnology, and teamwork. Organizers note that no prior biotechnology experience is required to participate, and food and beverage will be provided for those in attendance.

Building Pathways into the Life Sciences

From environmental science, biology, chemistry, biotechnology, healthcare, and research to individuals simply wishing to investigate potential STEM careers, the group offers an environment for engagement, education, and networking. Students looking to secure membership details or register for the Nov. 19 hackathon can reach out via email at [email protected] or connect directly with the chapter on social media at @BIOHIVESUU.
