Missouri Re-signs Quarterback Austin Simmons for 2027

Austin Simmons Re-Signs With Missouri Ahead of 2027 Season

Stability is a rare commodity in modern college football, but the Missouri Tigers just secured the most vital piece of their puzzle. Quarterback Austin Simmons has officially re-signed with Missouri for the 2027 season, a development confirmed to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. This early commitment gives head coach Eli Drinkwitz a proven anchor under center just as the sport prepares for another volatile cycle in the transfer portal.

Simmons landed in Columbia after a winding start to his collegiate career. Following the 2025 season at Ole Miss, where he opened as the starter before losing the job to Trinidad Chambliss, Simmons made the jump to Missouri during the offseason. The transition happened without interruption. Through eight games, he has completed 63.3% of his passes for 1,952 yards, tossing 16 touchdowns against just two interceptions.

Powering the SEC Passing Attack

That production has turned Missouri’s aerial attack into a legitimate conference force. The Tigers currently rank fourth in the SEC in passing offense, churning out 257.1 yards per game while sitting 26th nationally in expected points added per dropback at 0.19. Simmons has benefited from throwing to some of the conference’s premier pass catchers, including Cayden Lee and Donovan Olugbode.

That trio serves as the engine for a passing offense that has kept the Tigers in the mix to reach the College Football Playoff this season. Locking up Simmons now gives the program distinct cost certainty as the coaching staff turns its attention to retaining supporting talent.

Missouri Prioritizes Retaining Top Playmakers and Roster Talent

With the most expensive player on the roster already accounted for, Missouri can focus on keeping its surrounding playmakers in Columbia. Olugbode emerged as a sophomore with 584 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, making him a prime candidate to anchor the 2027 receiving corps. Lee leads the SEC in receiving yards as a senior, though his potential return depends on whether he chooses to utilize a fifth year of eligibility or pursue the NFL draft.

The ground game presents similar personnel questions. Jamal Roberts leads the SEC with 1,005 rushing yards, while teammate Ahmad Hardy weighs his own professional prospects alongside the recovery from a gunshot wound suffered earlier this year. Meanwhile, the offensive line requires immediate attention. Several fifth-year seniors on the interior are set to depart, and Lee could also be hearing his name called in the 2027 NFL Draft at left tackle.

For Drinkwitz, having Simmons locked in provides an invaluable recruitment pitch. While rival programs face uncertainty behind center, Missouri enters the offseason with a proven commodity ready to lead the charge.
