Swarthmore Swims Past Washington College in 182-78 Centennial Conference Meet
The visiting #24 Swarthmore Garnet dominated host Washington College with an 182-78 victory on Saturday at the Casey Swim Center. The decisive Centennial Conference men’s swimming meet showcased depth across the board for the nationally ranked Garnet.
Nathan Rawa provided the brightest spot for the Shoremen by capturing three first-place finishes during the afternoon. Rawa claimed the 50-yard breaststroke in 27.11 seconds, took the 100 backstroke in 52.20 seconds, and blazed through the 50 butterfly in 23.04 seconds to set a new pool record in that event. Yet individual brilliance could not bridge the massive gap created by Swarthmore’s collective roster strength.
How the Meet Unfolded Across Individual and Relay Events
Swarthmore improved its record to 4-0 overall and in the Centennial, while the Shoremen are 2-3 and 1-3 respectively.
Gabe Summa added crucial points for the Shoremen by securing second place in both the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.31 and the 100 freestyle at 49.93. Teammate Mike Lee touched second in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.50 and grabbed fourth in the 50-yard backstroke at 27.33. Jackson Rooney notched a third-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle by clocking 10:21.71, while James Hackett took third in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:49.31.
Relay events further highlighted the uphill battle for the hosts. The 200-yard medley relay team of Gabe Summa, Brody Salpeter, Emmitt Winters, and James Hackett finished third in 1:40.98. Later in the meet, the 200 freestyle relay team of Mike Lee, Jackson Rooney, Gabe Summa, and Nathan Rawa delivered a first-place finish with a time of 1:27.35.
Looking Ahead to York College
The Shoremen will step out of conference play on Saturday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m., when it visits York College of Pennsylvania.
