A 17-year-old boy has been arrested and charged following a suspicious pre-dawn house fire in Sydney’s inner west that destroyed a two-story residence and sent four people, including an 88-year-old woman, to the hospital.
The Response in Abbotsford
Emergency services received a flood of calls around 4:00 AM on Tuesday as flames tore through the property on Weddle Avenue in Abbotsford. Forty firefighters operating ten trucks arrived to find the building well alight. The blaze was so intense that it briefly spread to an adjoining house before crews managed to contain it.

Neighbours woke to the sound of fire tearing through the building. One local resident told the ABC she initially mistook the sound for gunfire. During the chaos, a 49-year-old civilian scaled a ladder alongside responding police officers to pull the 88-year-old resident from a balcony. Burwood Police Area Commander Superintendent Christine McDonald praised the swift rescue effort during a media briefing.
“I am incredibly proud of the police and the 49-year-old civilian who rescued that woman,” Supt McDonald said. “They saved her life.”
Among the responding officers was one who had graduated in August. Along with the elderly homeowner, her 65-year-old son, his 53-year-old wife, and a 44-year-old renter were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. While the renter received treatment, he did not require hospitalisation, whereas the elderly woman and her family were taken to hospital.
The Arrest in Merrylands
Investigators from Strike Force Sweetenham, the Burwood Police Area Command, and the State Crime Command’s Arson Squad quickly classified the blaze as suspicious. Eyewitness accounts provided to police described seeing a male wearing a balaclava pouring an accelerant onto the Weddle Avenue home before setting it alight.
The suspect inadvertently caught himself on fire during the act before fleeing the scene in a red Holden Astra. Nearly twenty hours after the flames erupted, detectives traced the suspect to a residence on Blackwood Road in Merrylands, in Sydney’s west.
Police arrested the 17-year-old boy at approximately 11:00 PM on Tuesday. Paramedics treated him at the scene for burn injuries to his hands and legs before transporting him to a hospital under police guard. During a subsequent search warrant executed at the Merrylands address, detectives seized a number of items of interest linked to the investigation.
Teenager Faces Charges in Parramatta Children's Court
Authorities formally charged the teenager with damaging property by fire or explosion exceeding $15,000 in value, being carried in a conveyance taken without the consent of the owner, and dishonestly obtaining property by deception.
The matter was slated for the Parramatta Children’s Court on Wednesday. Legal representation for the teenager made no application for bail, and no formal plea was entered during the initial appearance as the accused remained in the hospital. The case will return to court on November 9.
Investigators have confirmed that the occupants of the destroyed Abbotsford home had no known links to criminal activity, and the exact motive behind the attack remains unknown. Authorities have urged anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV recordings, or additional eyewitness accounts of the red Holden Astra’s movements to contact Crime Stoppers.
