Three BYU tennis players head to Los Angeles for ITA Sectionals
The competition begins Thursday, Nov. 5, and runs through Nov. 8, serving as a critical gateway for athletes aiming to secure spots in the NCAA Individual Championships.

According to a report from byucougars.com, the trio earned their positions following a strong showing at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. That regional event took place in Provo from Oct. 13-17, where the Cougars faced off against top talent from across the Mountain region.
The path to Los Angeles was paved by specific individual and team successes during that mid-October stretch. Bluestein secured her place in the sectional singles competition after advancing to the quarterfinals during the regional tournament. Meanwhile, Korhonen and Tan demonstrated their chemistry on the court to qualify for the doubles portion of the sectionals after reaching the semifinals in their regional matches.
Sage Bergeson secures national tournament berth
While three athletes move forward to the sectionals, one standout performance has already cleared the highest hurdle. Sage Bergeson will not participate in the Los Angeles sectionals because she has already achieved her primary objective: qualifying for the NCAA Individual Championships.
Bergeson’s qualification came directly from her performance at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, where she fought her way into the singles final. By reaching that stage, she earned an automatic berth to the national tournament, allowing her to bypass the sectional round and focus on the upcoming national stage.
The transition from regional play to the ITA Sectional Championships represents a significant increase in the level of competition. For the players involved, the stakes in Los Angeles are binary: success results in a trip to the NCAA Individual Championships, while failure ends the postseason run. The focus now shifts from the home courts of Provo to the West Coast as the Cougars attempt to maintain their momentum in the singles and doubles draws.
