Ice hockey returned to Trenton on October 24, drawing a near sellout crowd of 7,000 fans to CURE Insurance Arena for the Trenton Ironhawks’ season opener. Mercer County Executive Dan Benson was on hand as the Ironhawks secured a 4-1 victory over the Adirondack Thunder, following a 13-year absence of ice hockey in Trenton.
Turnersville native Mikey Colella notched the first home goal in Ironhawks history at 15:43 of the opening period, putting the hosts ahead 1-0. The Ironhawks enter their inaugural season maintaining affiliations with the NHL’s New York Islanders and the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Hammers, with 36 regular-season home games scheduled at CURE Insurance Arena.
