Trevor Ozawa and Tyler Dos Santos-Tam won seats on the Honolulu City Council Tuesday night, with Ozawa reclaiming the District 4 seat and Dos Santos-Tam earning a second term in District 6, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.
Ozawa, a lawyer and former council member, soundly defeated first-time challenger Tara Malia Gregory in East Oahu’s District 4 race, capturing nearly 67% of the vote to Gregory’s 33% with a majority of votes counted. The district stretches from Hawaii Kai to Waikiki. Ozawa sought to return to the council after successfully contesting the eligibility of incumbent Council Chair Tommy Waters, who was barred by the Hawaii Supreme Court in August from running for a third consecutive four-year term under the Honolulu City Charter’s term limits.
“It’s been like a long-distance sprint,” Ozawa said of his campaign, ahead of this evening’s election results. “It’s been a good process and a good journey.”
In urban Honolulu’s District 6, incumbent Tyler Dos Santos-Tam topped first-time challenger Corey Morihara with 74% of the vote to Morihara’s 26%. District 6 includes portions of Kakaako, Downtown Honolulu, Chinatown, Nuuanu and Kalihi. Elected in 2022, Dos Santos-Tam campaigned on his legislative record, which includes affordable housing, transit-oriented development and constituent services. He said he introduced 61 bills during his first term, 43 of which became law.
“Over the past four years, I think the voters can see that my team and I have been working hard on issues large and small in the district,” Dos Santos-Tam said ahead of this evening’s results. “From individual concerns like overgrown trees to big picture issues like cleaning up Downtown and Chinatown, I think the voters recognize that I’m able to get things done and deliver.”
Morihara, a general contractor and city worker, centered his campaign on infrastructure improvements, accountability in city spending and increased responsiveness to residents. Besides the two contested races, incumbents Matt Weyer of District 2, which includes the North Shore, and Val Aquino Okimoto of District 8, which includes Central Oahu, won their seats outright after running unopposed in the August primary.
