Trump Renews Call to Rename New Mexico as New America

President Donald Trump renewed his push to rename New Mexico as “New America” in an October 19 post on Truth Social, arguing the change would boost state prestige, home values, and personal incomes without offering supporting data or a formal implementation process.

The Constitutional Roadblock

New Mexico’s congressional delegation has made it clear that the president lacks the legal authority to make it happen. An executive order cannot amend a state constitution or alter a state’s legal identity.

In a September 10 letter, U.S. Sens. Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich, alongside U.S. lawmakers. Reps. Teresa Leger Fernández, Melanie Stansbury, and Gabe Vasquez—all Democrats representing New Mexico—drew a hard line against the proposal.

“Let us be clear: the President has no legal authority to rename New Mexico,” the lawmakers wrote in their joint letter.

Changing the state’s name would require changing its constitution through New Mexico’s own constitutional process. The congressional delegation also asked Apple and Google to keep identifying the state as New Mexico on their mapping services, regardless of presidential pressure.

Political Fallout and Local Priorities

The latest Truth Social post follows an earlier push by Trump over Labor Day weekend, weeks before his latest post, Luján’s office said. The response from the Democratic Party of New Mexico was swift and unequivocal.

In an October 19 statement, state party leaders said the proposal disrespects the state’s history, culture, and people. Daniel Garcia, a spokesperson for the Democratic Party of New Mexico, argued that Republicans downplaying or supporting the renaming effort are placing their loyalty on Trump ahead of New Mexico.

“If voters needed to know before election day if the Republicans put MAGA over New Mexico, just look at how Republicans either grossly downplay or even condone Trump’s call to rename our state,” Garcia said.

The controversy distracts voters from concerns about grocery prices, gas and affordable health care, Garcia said. Voters who oppose Trump’s repeated remarks should vote early and support Democratic candidates, the party said.

The state’s name belongs to its people and reflects its history and constitution, the congressional delegation said in its September letter.
