Two Hospitalized After High-Speed Three-Vehicle Crash on H-1 Freeway

Two people in critical condition after high-speed H-1 Freeway collision

A 32-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition Sunday evening following a three-vehicle crash on the westbound H-1 Freeway. The collision, which occurred near the airport area at approximately 6:25 p.m., involved a high-speed loss of control that sent one vehicle overturning into a concrete median, kitv.com reported.

The sequence of events began when the 32-year-old woman was passing the airport off-ramp. According to police, she was driving at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her vehicle and sideswiped a car driven by a 48-year-old man. The impact caused the man’s vehicle to overturn and slide into the center concrete median.

The chain reaction continued when the woman’s vehicle came to a stop in lane number one. While stationary, it was struck by a third vehicle driven by a 48-year-old woman traveling westbound. Unlike the other two drivers involved, the 48-year-old woman was not injured and remained at the scene.

Police investigate speed as contributing factor

Investigators are currently working to determine the exact cause of the crash, though speed has already been identified as a significant factor. While police confirmed that all three drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident, the investigation remains open to determine if other substances were involved.

At this stage, authorities have not confirmed whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The investigation is ongoing as officials reconstruct the moments leading up to the loss of control near the airport off-ramp.

This incident follows a separate recent tragedy in the area; a 62-year-old man died from injuries sustained days after a moped collision in Kalihi earlier this week. Both incidents highlight the ongoing safety challenges faced by commuters on Hawaii’s major transit arteries.
