Two Seriously Injured in Topeka Stabbing; Suspect in Custody

Two people are fighting for their lives in a local hospital after a stabbing on Southwest Fillmore Street in Topeka left them seriously injured.

Tactical sweep on Southwest Fillmore Street

Topeka Police Department (TPD) officers responded to the 1600 block of Southwest Fillmore Street at 12:08 p.m. after receiving reports of a possible stabbing.

The scene quickly evolved from a medical emergency into a tactical operation. The suspect fled the area on foot while remaining armed, forcing police to shift priorities from investigation to immediate containment.

TPD Sgt. Josh Klamm explained during a press conference that officers established a wide perimeter to protect surrounding residents and secure the crime scene. The high-stakes search ended when a person of interest was taken into custody.

Victims in critical condition

While the suspect is now behind bars, the physical toll remains high. Both victims were rushed to a local hospital, where they continue to undergo treatment for serious injuries.

The disruption to the residential area was significant. Containment of an armed suspect on the move typically necessitates blocked streets and door-to-door inquiries, leaving a heavy police presence that lingers long after the handcuffs are clicked shut.

The search for digital evidence

As the investigation moves into the interrogation room, critical questions persist. Investigators have not yet determined if the victims and the suspect knew each other—a detail that would distinguish a targeted attack from a random act of violence.

Police are asking residents in the 1600 block of Southwest Fillmore Street to review their surveillance and doorbell camera footage to establish an objective timeline of the escalation.

Sgt. Josh Klamm stated that the incident remains under investigation.

A community under scrutiny

The department continues to piece together the sequence of events.
