Following a suspected plot near RAF Fairford, British police have arrested a suspect on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. Five initial suspects and a dual UK-Iranian national were previously bailed, while U.S. bombers have been redeployed to home stations as security concerns persist.
The sequence began in the early hours of September 27 when suspicious vehicles were seen near RAF Fairford.
Police Evacuate Whelford After Initial Arrests
Gloucestershire Police assistant chief constable Richard Ocone noted that the emergency services maintain well-rehearsed plans for managing major incidents as police responded to the Gloucestershire village of Whelford, establishing a 400-meter cordon around the base and evacuating residents from 85 homes as bomb-disposal robots and emergency services moved into the area. Residents were permitted to return home on Monday evening as the police cordon was reduced.
Following extensive interviews, the initial five men were released on police bail under stringent conditions regarding their movement and contact with others. The suspects include a 24-year-old from Camden, three men aged 23, 24, and 25 from Westminster, and a 24-year-old from Willesden. A sixth suspect—initially reported as a 27-year-old and subsequently corrected by UK police as a 25-year-old British-Iranian dual national arrested in Westminster—was also taken into custody and released on bail.
Washington and London Respond to Foreign Actor Claims
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on television that the situation clearly involved the hands of a foreign actor, while declining to share immediate details. During an interview on the Fox News network’s Hannity programme, Rubio remarked that there were matters he could not disclose on the air for various reasons, though a spokesperson for the U.S. European Command stated it would be inappropriate to discuss intelligence matters while the U.S. continues to assess base threat environments.
“What happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation. It’s one that clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor. I won’t get into great detail about that yet.”

President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the decision to release the suspects on bail, claiming during an Oval Office event that the suspects had been under investigation and looking to do big damage. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham also referred to the incident near RAF Fairford as a reminder of the threats faced by the country. Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to the UK Warren Stephens praised the bilateral collaboration to keep citizens safe both at home and abroad.

Tehran rejected any connection to the event. The Iranian embassy in London issued a statement on X categorizing the allegations as unfounded and malicious speculations intended to fuel Iranophobia propaganda in the UK. The Iranian foreign ministry similarly dismissed the claims, and Iranian state media reported that Tehran summoned the British ambassador, with Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi urging London to revise its inappropriate approach toward Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi also wrote on X that releasing supposed terrorists working for foreign states was misguided.
U.S. Redploys Bombers from RAF Fairford
RAF Fairford has served as a primary European forward-operating base for U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command. The facility hosted a dozen B-1B Lancer heavy bombers that were heavily utilized during operations against Iranian missile sites. Following the security alert, the Pentagon announced that all U.S. bombers deployed to the base had re-deployed back to their home stations in the United States. Following the incident, the U.S. Embassy in London issued a security alert urging American citizens to exercise caution and be mindful of personal security.
While the Wall Street Journal reported that the aircraft flew home due to security concerns linked to the plots, a senior NATO military official stated that the redeployment would not impact the alliance’s defensive agility.
As the investigation continues under multiple lines of inquiry, Gloucestershire Police confirmed that emergency services and armed forces remain engaged in securing the area.
