Woman Charged with Breaching Donaldson Victims’ Anonymity

A 55-year-old woman was arrested in the Ballynahinch area and charged by Police Service of Northern Ireland detectives with breaching the lifetime anonymity of victims in the Jeffrey Donaldson case. She is scheduled to appear at Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 24, as investigators warn that naming protected complainants carries criminal charges.

Newry Criminal Investigation Department Charges 55-Year-Old Woman

Investigators confirmed that the woman will appear in court next month after detectives investigated the breach of anonymity concerning the recent court proceedings.

Police formally charged the individual with breaching a lifetime ban on reporting the identity of alleged victims. The case is scheduled for an initial hearing at Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 24th. As standard operational procedure in the jurisdiction, the resulting charge requires routine review by the Public Prosecution Service.

Automatic Lifelong Anonymity Under United Kingdom Law

Under United Kingdom legislation, child victims of sexual offences maintain automatic lifelong anonymity. This statutory protection remains in full force regardless of whether the affected individual was a minor or an adult at the time legal proceedings and subsequent trials take place.

During the primary legal proceedings, the two central individuals involved were designated anonymously as Complainant A and Complainant B. Donaldson himself was convicted of 18 separate sex offences, which included one count of rape. These offences involved two women when they were children during a timeline spanning from 1985 to 2008.

Public Prosecution Service Review and Police Warnings

Police investigators emphasized that naming or alluding to victims in cases such as this, may result in arrest, and subsequent charge to court.

Legal Status of Jeffrey Donaldson and Pending Appeals

Donaldson is currently held at Maghaberry Prison while he awaits formal sentencing by the court. Meanwhile, legal representatives have initiated challenges against the outcome of his trial. Solicitor John McBurney has previously confirmed that papers have been lodged for an appeal.
