Zelenskyy Heads to White House for Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the United States early Tuesday and is expected at the White House for talks with United States President Donald Trump, according to reporting by France 24 and The Jerusalem Post. The visit, scheduled for 9:30 am (1330 GMT), aims to secure ongoing American support against Russia and bring peace closer, according to statements shared by Zelenskyy on social media.

Zelenskyy Arrives at White House for Talks as US-Ukraine Relations Shift

The meeting comes more than four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion. Relations between Zelenskyy and Trump have improved significantly in recent weeks, contrasting with a heated exchange and raised voices in the Oval Office in February 2025, according to Al Jazeera. Since returning to power in January last year, Trump has largely ended direct deliveries of US arms to Kyiv in favor of the PURL programme, which allows European nations to buy weapons and supply them to Ukraine, France 24 reported. However, Washington continues to provide crucial intelligence and access to the Starlink satellite system for frontline troops.

Sanctions Legislation and Congressional Meetings

In addition to his visit with Trump, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with the US Senate on Tuesday evening, according to two Senate aides cited by Al Jazeera. The Senate is set to vote on Tuesday on a long-pending Russian sanctions bill championed by the late US Senator Lindsey Graham. Zelenskyy is also attending Graham’s funeral.

If enacted, the legislation would impose 100 percent tariffs on goods from the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India. In a last-minute intervention, Trump sought to add sanctions on Iran to the same bill, a move Zelenskyy previously called a “great idea” during an interview with Laura Loomer.

Convergence of Conflicts and Military Production

The diplomatic engagements coincide with a convergence of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Ukraine recently attacked an Iranian tanker in the Caspian Sea that was carrying drones and military components from Iran to Russia, according to Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk.

Meanwhile, defense cooperation between Kyiv and Washington has advanced. Earlier this month, the two leaders agreed to allow Ukraine to jointly produce Patriot air defense interceptors, and both countries are moving closer to a deal on joint drone production, Al Jazeera noted. Ukraine is on track to produce 6 to 7 million short-range attack drones this year, while Ukraine’s broader defense priorities also include anti-ballistic defense and acquiring prototype European anti-ballistic systems such as Freyja, according to The Jerusalem Post.

Ongoing Frontline Fighting and Long-Range Strikes

Heavy fighting continues along Ukraine’s front lines, with intense combat concentrated in the Konstantinyvka and Pokrovsk directions in the Donetsk region, according to Al Jazeera. Russian strikes on eastern Ukraine killed seven people and injured more than 20, officials stated, while a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Belgorod region killed one person and injured two. Additionally, the Russian capital’s mayor reported that more than 390 Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region overnight, resulting in minor damage to residential buildings.
