Police seized cellphones from suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu after executing a Johannesburg High Court search and seizure warrant at his KwaZulu-Natal home on Monday. The raid, part of a fraud and defeating justice investigation, marks the second time authorities have taken Mchunu’s communication devices.

The high-stakes operation unfolded early Monday morning when South African Police Service officials descended on the private family residence of suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu in KwaZulu-Natal. Armed with a Johannesburg-issued high court search and seizure warrant targeting specific cellular phones linked to specific IMEI numbers identified in the court document, officers secured the devices directly from the minister.

Second Phone Seizure in Ongoing Investigations

According to statements released by Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sithembiso Mshengu, the minister complied with the legal directive. Mchunu handed over his handset in the presence of his attorney, insisting that he acted as a law-abiding citizen. However, representatives highlighted that this marks the second time police have seized these communication tools without returning the first set taken during an earlier operation.

KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda explained that the search and seizure operation forms part of a normal Investigative process centered on cases involving fraud and defeating the ends of justice. Those specific charges were originally opened back in 2025 at the Durban Central police station.

Simultaneous Raids and Political Allegations

The seizure of Mchunu’s communication device followed closely on the heels of the arrest of his alleged ally, Gen Shadrack Sibiya, who is facing rape charges and appeared at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Reports indicate that police targeted multiple properties simultaneously on Monday morning, executing a raid at Sibiya’s house in Centurion at the same hour officers arrived at Mchunu’s KZN residence.
