Alexander Nollenberger, a left-back for second-division 1. FC Magdeburg nutmegged Bayern Munich superstar Michael Olise during a DFB-Pokal clash on Wednesday. While the skill move provided a rare highlight for the underdog, Bayern Munich ultimately dominated the match with a 6-1 victory at the Allianz Arena.
Nollenberger finds a moment of brilliance against Olise
The matchup pitted Nollenberger against Olise, a right winger who finished ninth in the current year’s World Footballer of the Year award. For the majority of the contest, Olise operated at a masterclass level, recording two goals and one assist. However, Nollenberger managed to get the better of the Munich star on one specific occasion by putting the ball through his legs.
Speaking to ARD in a post-match interview, Nollenberger admitted the feat was lucky but joked, “I almost need to frame that.” He remained grounded about the achievement, noting that despite the highlight, it provided no practical benefit to his team’s result.
Bayern Munich overwhelms Magdeburg after a competitive start
The match did not begin as a blowout. Olise opened the scoring in the 10th minute, but Magdeburg responded quickly. In the 15th minute, Mateusz Zukowski scored a stunning goal to level the game at 1-1. The second-division side held their own against the dominant hosts through the first half, though Ismael Saibari put Bayern ahead in the 21st minute. Bayern nearly extended the lead further before the break when Baris Atik hit the post in stoppage time (45+2).

The momentum shifted entirely in the second 45 minutes. Bayern seized complete control after the interval, utilizing a string of goals to cement the 6-1 result. The rout was punctuated by a penalty that pushed the score to 3-1, after which the Bavarian side became relentless.
“What a machine,” said Nollenberger, reflecting on Bayern’s pressure and hunger for goals. “We kept it close until half-time at 2-1; we were still within striking distance. Then came the penalty to make it 3-1, and they just didn’t stop. They don’t stop. And in the end, you can’t defend everything away.”
Massive traveling support fills the Allianz Arena
Despite the lopsided final score, the atmosphere was driven by a significant contingent of Magdeburg supporters. Goal.com noted that at least 10,000 fans made the trip to Munich, while Bild reported the number could have been as high as 13,000.
This represents one of the largest away followings for a domestic match at the Allianz Arena in recent years. The last comparable event occurred in the spring of 2017, when VfB Stuttgart brought 15,000 supporters to a match against TSV 1860 Munich.
Nollenberger reflects on a surreal experience
For Nollenberger, the match carried personal significance as a Bavarian-born player and a former member of the Bayern Munich reserve team from 2018 to 2020. He described the experience of standing up to his former club as feeling “like being in a film,” calling the entire event “incredibly beautiful and surreal.”

While the 6-1 scoreline suggests a mismatch, Nollenberger maintained that the experience was “fun” and acknowledged that such margins are common when facing a club of Bayern’s caliber.
