Bordeaux Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations as 55,000 Flee Gironde Region

Massive wildfires burning near Bordeaux have forced the evacuation of about 55,000 people from the Gironde region as intense winds and drought-hit woodlands fuel erratic blazes. France deployed specialized military aircraft and thousands of emergency personnel to contain the disaster, while authorities shortened the final stage of the Tour de France to redeploy security forces.

Emergency Evacuations and the Threat to Bordeaux

Overnight into Sunday, emergency services evacuated about 55,000 people from villages south of Bordeaux within the Gironde region, an area famed for its vineyards. Municipal and regional authorities ordered mass departures for residents living between the advancing firefront and the regional capital. In total, more than 220,000 people have been evacuated in the south west of the country, while wildfires have raged across Europe over the past week, primarily France and Spain, where more than 330,000 people have been evacuated. France has been worst-affected, with an area of 42,000 hectares burnt, making it one of the largest forest fires since World War Two, and about 98,000 hectares have burnt across the country since the start of the year.

Speaking on Sunday, the city’s Mayor, Thomas Cazenave, said the fire was about 15km (9 miles) from the outskirts of the city’s wider region, and 25 to 30km (15 and 19 miles) from its centre, although he downplayed the possibility of Bordeaux being evacuated. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Sunday the situation in the region remained very unfavourable and the wildfire was moving erratically towards the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the fires as unprecedented and said the Gironde blaze became so strong on Friday that it had begun generating its own winds.

Authorities ordered people between the fire and Bordeaux to evacuate, including from parts of the city’s western suburbs and other towns and villages. Dry vegetation and brisk winds are causing the fire to spread, with 60km (37 miles) of the A63 motorway, which leads to Spain, having been closed.

Unprecedented Fire Behavior and Military-Grade Response

The intensity of the Gironde fire surprised emergency personnel, with officials reporting that the blaze grew into “a firestormon Friday after igniting earlier this week. Captain Nicolas Braz, one of the leaders of the firefighting operation, said the fire had createdits own winds – complete with whirlwinds, adding it waserratic and unmanageable”.

France sent a hulking military cargo plane, specifically the giant A400M transporter, to dump tons of flame retardants as it battled raging wildfires on Saturday, its long plume of ochre-colored retardant trailing over drought-hit woodlands in the southwest. The government mobilized soldiers to join fire crews and was rushing in 1.5 million face masks to protect against choking smoke. In the Gironde region, the rescue effort involves 2,500 firefighters, including a Swiss team, 1,500 military personnel and almost 1,200 police and gendarmes, who are carrying out evacuations and helping with rescue and securing operations.

France and Spain both asked fellow European Union members for help. President Emmanuel Macron said, We will soon be able to rely on reinforcements including two Croatian Canadair firefighting aircraft, two Portuguese Air Tractor aircraft, and two heavy-lift Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Tour de France Redeployments and Regional Crisis

The final stage of the Tour de France, taking place in Paris on Sunday, has been shortened from 133km to 89km (from 82 miles to 55) to allow security forces to be redeployed to the firefighting effort. Race organizers and the Paris police department announced the truncated 21st and final stage on Sunday for the three-week Tour, reflecting the immense strain that two large fires in the southwest are causing for emergency services. Part of the race’s security detail will instead reinforce the response efforts in the areas affected by the wildfires, according to the statement announcing the exceptional measures made necessary by the situation. Tour riders will race Sunday inside Paris, rather than starting from Thoiry, west of the capital.

The latest wildfires in southern Europe this week have displaced more than 250,000 people, including some 70,000 people who were evacuated in central Spain, where the government declared a national emergency Friday after wildfires forced the evacuation of some 10,000 people in the central region of Madrid. In southern France, more than 60,000 residents fled their homes, including by boat, to escape two major blazes, with France’s Interior minister Laurent Nunez noting that 40,000 people have been evacuated in the Gironde department, and 23,000 in the Landes. One man died in Manises, the municipality reported on its Facebook page, the first death so far in the blazes.
