A car sits embedded on the Luas Red Line track at Blackhorse
A car has become trapped on the Luas Red Line tracks near the Blackhorse stop, forcing a significant suspension of service between Belgard and Heuston, The Irish Times reported. The vehicle is described as being “embedded” on the track, a situation so severe that standard recovery methods are insufficient to clear the line.
Luas officials confirmed via a post on X that the incident has disrupted the central artery of the Red Line. Because the vehicle is wedged into the infrastructure, the transit authority stated that a specialist crane is required to remove it. Maintenance teams arrived on-site Tuesday evening to manage the scene, but the complexity of the extraction means the disruption is expected to last for several hours.
Service disruptions affect commuters between Belgard and Heuston
The blockage has effectively split the Red Line into two operational segments. Currently, services are only running between Tallaght/Saggart and Belgard, and separately from Heuston to The Point/Connolly. This leaves a significant gap in the network, specifically impacting those traveling through the Blackhorse area and the central corridor connecting the western suburbs to the city center.

For those caught in the disruption, Luas has issued a directive to use alternative transport. Tickets remain valid on Dublin Bus, allowing passengers to bypass the blocked rail section. While the Red Line remains heavily impacted, the Green Line services are operating normally, providing a partial alternative for those able to reroute through the city’s wider transit network.
The timeline for a full return to service remains dependent on the arrival and operation of the heavy lifting equipment. Luas has promised to keep the public updated as the recovery process unfolds.
