Carrick to Remain Man Utd Boss for Chelsea Clash, Reports Say

Michael Carrick will remain the head coach of Manchester United for their Premier League match against Chelsea this Saturday, according to reports from the BBC, Sky Sports, and Britain’s Press Association. The decision comes after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday left the club just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

United’s chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox were at the Carrington training ground on Monday to discuss Carrick’s future. Carrick was also present on Monday morning despite the first team having the day off, and he left the facility at about 17:00 GMT. While the club hierarchy had been considering alternatives for the role, Carrick oversaw a routine training session on Tuesday and has been granted the opportunity to turn the team’s fortunes around.

United Considers Replacements Amid Worst Start in 40 Years

Sources indicate that United had explored replacing the 45-year-old, with former Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann and former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe among the contenders. United reportedly admires Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, though his current contract could complicate a move.

The club currently faces a severe slump, having failed to win in eight matches across all competitions. This season represents United’s worst start to a league campaign in 40 years, with only one victory in eight Premier League matches. The team has won just two of 12 matches in all competitions this term, earning seven points from their eight league games.

Players Criticize Tactics and Board While Fans Support Carrick

Captain Bruno Fernandes was dropped to the bench for the Bournemouth match after criticizing Carrick’s tactics following a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como. Fernandes remained an unused substitute during the defeat. Separately, defender Lisandro Martinez criticized the board for a lack of investment after a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Despite the results, matchgoing fans at Old Trafford chanted Carrick’s name in support after Sunday’s loss, though they directed boos toward the players. Carrick gestured toward the Stretford End as they chanted. Former United player Wayne Rooney criticized the squad’s performances on the Stick to United podcast, stating, The players haven’t got a leg to stand on. Rooney added, What’s not fair is the performances they are giving, noting he could see the pain and anger in the faces of fans while players walked around the pitch.

Carrick Reflects on Results After Permanent Appointment

Carrick was initially appointed as interim boss in January 2026 after the sacking of Ruben Amorim. After leading the team to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification by winning 12 of 17 matches, he was made permanent head coach on May 22 with a two-year deal. Since then, owner Jim Ratcliffe has overseen the mid-season dismissals of both Amorim and Erik ten Hag.
