Democratic Representative Chris Pappas won election on Tuesday to the US Senate in New Hampshire, defeating former GOP Sen. John Sununu and securing a historic milestone as the first openly gay man to serve in the upper chamber of Congress.
How Chris Pappas Retained the New Hampshire Seat for Democrats
Pappas kept the seat in Democratic control following the retirement of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who held the position for 18 years.
The contest pitted Pappas against an opponent with political lineage. Sununu is the son of former Gov. John H. Sununu and the brother of former Gov. Chris Sununu, carrying a surname with recognition across the state.
Republicans viewed the race as one of their pickup opportunities this cycle. New Hampshire has not elected a Republican to the Senate since 2010, and a Republican has not won the state at the presidential level since 2000, though the GOP has held the governor’s mansion since 2017. Former Vice President Kamala Harris carried New Hampshire by just 3 percentage points in the 2024 presidential race.
Sununu Distance Campaign Fails to Overcome National Headwinds
Sununu sought a comeback to the Senate after representing New Hampshire in both congressional chambers prior to his 2008 defeat by Shaheen. Sununu attempted to separate himself from President Donald Trump during the final weeks of the campaign amid high gas and diesel prices and the war in Iran.

The way Chris Pappas tells it, I’m President Trump’s long-lost son. I’ve never even met the man.
John Sununu, former GOP Senate candidate
Sununu pledged to act as an independent voice, promising voters that when the president’s policies are bad for New Hampshire, I’ll oppose them.
Those efforts were not enough to overcome national headwinds for Republicans, compounded by Trump’s unpopularity and low approval ratings as he urged voters to pretend he was on the ballot.
Historic Legislative Milestone and National Implications
The 46-year-old Pappas transitions from the House of Representatives, where he has served since January 2019 and co-chairs the Congressional Equality Caucus. Major LGBTQ advocacy groups immediately celebrated the outcome. The Human Rights Campaign, which endorsed Pappas, hailed his historic win and described him as a dedicated pro-equality champion, while GLAAD noted that he is making history.

Pappas summarized his legislative commitment in a statement on his website:
I am committed to fighting for the dignity and equality of all Americans.

The New Hampshire result contributed to an election outcome where Democrats held seats and flipped others, shaping the balance of power in Congress for the remainder of Trump’s second term.
