Four Charged With Murder in Albany, Georgia, After Teen’s Death

Three teenagers and a 22-year-old man have been charged with murder in Albany, Georgia, following the death of 15-year-old Austin Payne.

The victim was discovered inside an abandoned home on the 800 block of Cameo Lane on November 1, after his mother used cellphone tracking to locate him when he failed to return home following Halloween night.

The Albany Police Department confirmed the arrests of 22-year-old Detravion Parker, two 15-year-olds, and a 16-year-old in connection with the homicide, according to reports from Fox News. All four suspects are currently being held at the Dougherty County Jail.

The circumstances leading to the discovery of the body are particularly harrowing. During a November 2 news conference, Albany Police Chief Michael Persley revealed that the victim managed to reach out to his mother immediately after being shot. “He did make a call to his mother that he had been shot,” Chief Persley stated.

Investigators, working to reconstruct the events of that night, have reviewed surveillance footage, witness statements, and cellphone data. According to WALB, witnesses reported that a group of armed individuals approached the group Payne was walking with, demanded their belongings, and subsequently opened fire. Authorities are currently exploring the possibility that the victim was targeted in an attempted robbery, potentially linked to a handgun he had recently displayed on social media.

The tragedy has left a family grappling with the sudden loss of a teenager just days before his birthday. Austin Payne would have turned 16 on November 12. A relative writing on a GoFundMe page established to cover funeral expenses described the family’s struggle to “process this heartbreaking loss.” Payne is survived by his mother and his 17-year-old sister.

While the investigation into the specific motives and the sequence of the robbery attempt continues, the incident highlights a persistent concern regarding youth involvement in violent crime. The intersection of social media posturing and real-world violence is a phenomenon that has increasingly complicated the work of local law enforcement agencies nationwide.

The Albany Police Department is continuing to seek information from the public regarding the shooting. Those with knowledge of the events on Cameo Lane are encouraged to contact investigators at 229-431-2100.
