The University of Utah secured a hard-fought 28-20 victory over BYU at Rice-Eccles Stadium this past Saturday, but the post-game narrative quickly shifted from the scoreboard to the timeline.
Following the win, the Utah football program shared a celebratory post on social media that drew immediate and sharp criticism from observers, according to Yahoo Sports.
By Sunday morning, November 8, the university had deleted the post in response to the mounting backlash.
While the content of the post was labeled by some online users as “embarrassing” and “classless,” the quick removal suggests the program recognized the disconnect between their intended message and the public reception.
Head coach Morgan Scalley addressed the game’s atmosphere during his postgame press conference, emphasizing a desire to move away from the toxicity that has historically plagued the rivalry. Scalley praised the fans and the effort of both teams, noting that he wanted the game to be defined by the competitive spirit on the field rather than extracurricular drama.
“We always talked about, when we have this opportunity, that we wanted to make it about what’s good,” Scalley said.
“We wanted to have a less toxic environment when it comes to the rivalry. I thought we had that today.”
Scalley also highlighted the resilience of his squad, particularly their ability to rebound from a difficult first half.
He pointed to the team’s internal communication during the halftime break as the catalyst for their second-half turnaround.
“They were so united, just talking to each other, saying we’ve got this, we’ve been here before,” Scalley explained. “The emphasis going into this game was we have to be able to out-physical them.”
The game featured standout performances, including that of Devon Dampier, whom Scalley described as a “warrior.” Dampier’s performance made him one of only two players in the FBS over the last 30 years to record multiple passing touchdowns, multiple rushing touchdowns, and at least 25 receiving yards in a single game.
Scalley also took time to credit the defensive effort, specifically mentioning Nate Ritchie and Trey Reynolds for their late-game interceptions. He framed these plays as evidence of the program’s culture of development.
“I love that the last two interceptions came from guys that stuck with a program, that we’re about development and about loving a culture,” Scalley said.
Despite the win, Scalley cautioned his team against letting the victory overshadow the remainder of the season. He noted that the team must immediately shift focus toward their next opponent, Arizona.
“This is one game that we’ve talked about and the reason I believe that we won today is our guys made it about us, not about them,” Scalley noted. "We cannot let the joy of this distract us from what the ultimate goal is."
The incident shows how high-stakes college football rivalries are increasingly played out in the stadium and online.
While the Utes managed to control the clock and the scoreboard on Saturday, the digital fallout forced a rare public retraction, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding team communications in the modern era.
