Frey Ranch Farmers & Distillers, a family-owned operation in Fallon, Nevada, has released a limited-edition whiskey called Third Harvest, bottled at 123.4 proof. The spirit, which is 61.7% alcohol by volume (ABV), is aged in oak barrels for a period of five to eight years.
Frey Family Grows All Grains on-Site in Nevada
The whiskey is crafted from a blend of wheat, malted barley, corn, rye, and triticale, a hybrid of rye and wheat. Co-founders and owners Colby and Ashley Frey grow 100% of the grains on-site specifically for whiskey production, a practice Colby Frey described as “really rare in the whiskey world.” The operation continues a family farming legacy in northern Nevada that began in 1854.
Perspectives on High Proof
The distillery owners and spirits experts agree that the high proof does not automatically determine the quality of the drink. Ashley Frey stated that the distillery proofs its whiskey based on flavor profiles rather than a specific number, aiming for the “best expression of our grain as a whiskey.” She noted that this particular batch is intended for drinkers with a “refined palate” capable of identifying various flavor profiles.
Derek Brown of the Washington, D.C.-based hospitality consulting firm Drink Company observed that while 123.4 proof is toward the upper limit of barrel-strength whiskies, it is not “outrageous.” Brown explained that high-proof spirits should ideally feature complex flavors from wood maturation to avoid an overpowering alcohol taste or a burning sensation. He suggested that those sensitive to bold or bitter flavors might prefer other beverages, though he noted it is “entirely reasonable” to add ice or water if the spirit is too strong.
Limited Release Costs 299 Dollars per Bottle
The release is strictly limited to approximately 700 bottles, with each bottle priced at $299. Ashley Frey described the release as “a piece of me and Colby’s hard work and heritage and love for the land and agriculture that’s expressed through a bottle of whiskey.”
