Georgia Homeowners to Receive Property Tax Relief Under Kemp Plan

Georgia Homeowners to See $18,000 Assessment Reduction as Property Tax Relief Funds Go Out This Week

“Along with our partners in the General Assembly, we are delivering on our promise to make life more affordable for hardworking Georgians by providing needed relief for homeowners from property taxes,” Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement.

As the state starts transmitting relief money to municipal governments this week, qualifying property owners in Georgia will experience a discount on their 2026 property tax statements, Gov. Brian Kemp announced Monday. Through the single-instance Homeowner Tax Relief Grant, eligible properties receive an $18,000 decrease in their assessed valuation.

That lowers the amount used to calculate property taxes. It does not mean homeowners will receive an $18,000 tax cut. Instead of being sent as a direct deposit or physical check, the financial benefit will show up right on the property tax statements. Based on statements from the governor’s administration, certain residents might already spot the discounts on statements they have obtained, whereas others will notice the markdown as municipalities send out their bills.

Application Process and Eligibility Requirements

The release noted that residents who already possess an approved homestead exemption are not required to file an extra application to receive the grant. Funds are being handed out by the Department of Revenue while local government applications are reviewed and necessary paperwork is checked and approved.

The governor and General Assembly approved the relief through Georgia’s amended fiscal year 2026 budget. If residents need clarification regarding whether they qualify or want to understand the discounts displayed on their statements, they ought to reach out to the office of their local tax commissioner.
