Kamari Moulton Injury Sidelines Iowa Running Back for Remainder of Season
Iowa football will face the remainder of the season without its leading rusher after running back Kamari Moulton suffered a season-ending injury during an Oct. 24 loss to Minnesota, head coach Kirk Ferentz announced on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Moulton exited the game in the first half and did not return. The loss creates a significant void in the Hawkeyes backfield as the team attempts to rebound from its performance in Minneapolis.
BREAKING: Kirk Ferentz has announced that RB Kamari Moulton is out for the season.
Moulton paces the Iowa offense with 86 carries for 541 yards and four rushing touchdowns this season. His absence leaves the Hawkeyes searching for production on the ground just as the team prepares to face a formidable Wisconsin defense that ranks 16th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in rushing yards allowed per game, surrendering no more than 154 yards on the ground in a single contest this year.
Ferentz Monitors L.J. Phillips Jr. Status
With Moulton sidelined, the running back room turns toward alternative options, though uncertainty surrounds L.J. Phillips Jr. Ferentz described Phillips as day-to-day for the upcoming matchup against the Badgers, stating that the coaching staff hopes to get him fully healthy by Saturday.

Phillips rushed for nearly 2,000 yards at FCS South Dakota last season, but injuries have limited him to 25 carries for 88 yards across a sparse offensive role. His most productive outing came against Washington, where he carried 10 times for 42 yards. Reflecting on his limited production, Phillips expressed frustration with his performance.
I’ve been disappointed, to be honest. I feel like I haven’t been playing up to the standard, the Iowa standard. I need to be better. I’ve got to be better. It’s kind of frustrating. I hold myself to a high level, a high standard.
Phillips emphasized the need for a collective effort from the remaining running backs. We have to play good for him. The whole RB room, we have to all step up,
he said.
Backup Runners Face Ball Security Concerns
The coaching staff must also weigh contributions from Braeden Jackson, Nathan McNeil, and Xavier Williams. That trio previously combined for seven touchdowns against the University of Northern Iowa earlier in the season when Moulton and Phillips were unavailable, though their offensive touches diminished in subsequent weeks. Ferentz noted that all three players will see opportunities against Wisconsin.
Ball security emerged as another point of emphasis following the Minnesota loss, where Phillips, McNeil, and Jackson all fumbled, with Minnesota recovering one. Ferentz pointed to daily practice drills addressing ball security and tackling fundamentals, attributing the turnovers to lapses in player concentration during a difficult offensive outing.
Iowa’s running game has struggled against power conference competition, failing to reach 100 rushing yards in four of five such games this season, with the lone exception being a 263-yard performance against Washington. Without Moulton, the Hawkeyes face narrow margins for error for the rest of their schedule.
