Kansas City Tour Owner Launches New Holiday Light Guide Website

Kansas City launches digital map for holiday light enthusiasts

A newly launched website is centralizing holiday light displays across the Kansas City area, providing residents and visitors with a tool to navigate 30 of the region’s most prominent installations. The platform offers a digital interface where users can select specific stops to create customized, self-guided routes, complete with estimated travel times for each journey. According to KMBC, this initiative marks the first time such a comprehensive, interactive guide has been compiled for the public.

Todd Abrams, owner of The Barley Bus, has been coordinating holiday light excursions for a decade. He emphasized that the project is designed to showcase the city during its most illuminated season. “We love showing off Kansas City. It shines the brightest during the holiday time,” Abrams said. While his team has historically operated tours departing from the West Bottoms, the new digital resource aims to broaden access for those preferring to manage their own itineraries.

Curating the city’s seasonal landmarks

The curated list of 30 locations includes established regional favorites that have become staples of the local holiday experience. Among the featured sites, Abrams highlighted “Christmas in the park at Longview” and the architecture of Union Station as primary attractions. The database also includes the Lane of Lights in Excelsior Springs, which Abrams described as “fantastic.”

“There’s some great neighborhood stops throughout Brookside,” said Todd Abrams. “It’s going to give you an estimated time and you can build the route right along as you go.”

The economic impact of holiday tourism in the Midwest often hinges on the accessibility of these distributed attractions. For local businesses, particularly those in the hospitality and transportation sectors, consolidating information into a single portal serves to streamline traffic and encourage longer stays. By allowing users to click and add stops to a dynamic route, the website reduces the friction often associated with navigating sprawling suburban light displays.

Logistics and future expansions

While the website currently focuses on holiday displays, the project may signal a shift toward broader seasonal mapping. Abrams indicated that if the current guide proves successful, the organizers might consider developing a similar framework for Halloween light displays next year. This approach reflects a growing trend in civic engagement, where digital tools are used to encourage local exploration and support regional tourism.

For those who prefer not to drive, the site also provides options to sign up for organized bus tours that visit a selection of the highlighted locations. This hybrid model—offering both independent route planning and guided group transport—caters to different visitor demographics, from families seeking flexibility to groups prioritizing convenience. As the holiday season approaches, the platform functions as a centralized hub for tracking the city’s most significant displays, ensuring that both residents and out-of-town visitors can efficiently manage their time while exploring the region’s festive offerings.
