MoDOT schedules Kansas City area maintenance for Nov. 9-13

Kansas City Drivers Face Week of Maintenance Delays

If your morning commute involves driving through the Kansas City metro area next week, you will want to account for a series of rolling maintenance projects. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced a slate of repairs and upkeep operations scheduled from Monday, Nov. 9, through Friday, Nov. 13.

While the agency is balancing these infrastructure needs, they have built in a mid-week pause. Crews will step back from the roadways on Wednesday, Nov. 11, to observe the Veterans Day holiday, meaning some relief for those traveling during the midweek peak.

The Impact on Jackson and Platte County Arteries

The most significant disruptions are concentrated on high-traffic corridors where even minor maintenance can lead to congestion. In Jackson County, motorists on Interstate 35 should expect intermittent lane closures in both directions between 17th Street and the Kansas state line. These closures are slated for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, as crews tackle essential drain cleaning.

North of the river, Platte County commuters face their own set of challenges. On Monday, Nov. 9, Interstate 29 northbound near Route HH will see a right-lane closure from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for brush removal. Crucially, the on-ramp from Route HH to I-29 northbound will remain closed for the duration of that work.

Infrastructure Maintenance Beyond the Highways

Beyond the major interstates, MoDOT is targeting several secondary routes for necessary improvements. The scope of work is broad, ranging from pavement repair to concrete replacement:

  • U.S. Route 71 (Jackson County): The northbound ramp to 75th St. will be closed on Monday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for brush removal.
  • Missouri Route 78 (Jackson County): The right lane at Missouri Route 7 will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 10, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for pavement repairs.
  • Route Z (Lafayette County): Various road closures between I-70 and Route TT are scheduled from Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., for brush cutting.
  • Route EE (Ray County): Between Missouri Route 210 and Missouri Route 10, road closures will occur daily from Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., to facilitate concrete replacement.
  • Missouri Route 20 (Saline County): Flagging operations are expected on Thursday, Nov. 12, and Friday, Nov. 13, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for ditch work.

The Invisible Cost of Roadway Upkeep

These scheduled projects represent only a fraction of the total labor MoDOT performs on its 7,000-mile network. Routine tasks—such as pothole patching, debris removal, and sign repair—occur daily.

MoDOT officials emphasize that not all work zones are static. Drivers should remain vigilant, as temporary lane closures for debris removal can appear with little notice. For those who rely on these routes daily, the agency provides updates through their website at www.modot.org/kansascity, or their social media channels on X and Facebook.

For now, the best strategy remains a simple one: stay alert, check for updates before you head out, and prepare for potential delays as crews work to keep the region moving.
