Mamdani quietly cans Eric Adams’ massive joint public safety training facility – NY Post

Mamdani Scraps $225 Million Multi-Agency Training Hub

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has quietly cancelled a massive planned public safety training facility that would have combined the training of officers and agents across more than a dozen municipal agencies, the NY Post reported.

Budget Omissions Drive City Hall Reversal

The decision scraps an initiative dating back to former Mayor Eric Adams’ administration. City Hall representatives confirmed the reversal, stating that Mamdani decided against moving forward with the proposal because there is no funding allocated for it in the current budget.

“Police officers, correction officers and other law enforcement personnel have distinct responsibilities and training needs, and we determined that spending $225 million to consolidate their existing training facilities was neither necessary nor a good use of public resources,” said Mamdani spokesman Sam Raskin.

Evolution of the 16-Agency Joint Project

The facility was originally expected to break ground earlier this year to break down operational silos between various city agencies possessing law enforcement arms. Initial funding for a smaller version of the project was first earmarked back in 2021 by then-Mayor Bill de Blasio to create a training facility for the Department of Correction on the NYPD academy campus in College Point, New York. The scope later expanded into a 16-agency joint hub.

Sharp Political Clash Over Public Safety Policy

City Council Republican Minority Leader David Carr sharply criticized the cancellation, pointing to potential fallout for municipal services and employment.

“While this is on brand for the defund-the-police, pro-decarceration DSA mayor, cancelling this facility is not just going to hurt policing, it’s going to have a detrimental impact on public safety and array of city services as well as kill hundreds of jobs,” Carr said. “It’s a reckless and frankly dangerous move to fulfill a campaign pledge to a bunch of radical zealots.”

From Campaign Opposition to Concrete Policy Shift

During the primary election last year, Mamdani and nearly every other Democratic mayoral contender opposed the 16-agency facility, comparing it directly to Atlanta’s controversial “Cop City” project. At the time, Eric Adams defended the initiative, arguing that opponents lacked an understanding of how to manage New York City’s primary issue of public safety by unifying park police, sheriffs, and corrections officers under one umbrella.

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani pledged to eliminate NYPD overtime entirely and opposed increasing the overall police headcount. While he faced heavy pushback for past comments regarding police funding, the cancellation of the joint training facility marks a concrete policy shift dismantling a cornerstone of the previous administration’s law enforcement strategy.

While the decision has been finalized through budget omissions, the exact date when Mamdani chose to officially pull the plug remains unclear, according to initial reporting by City & State.
