Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault praised rookie Aday Mara for his consistent, impactful play following the center’s season-high 18-point performance in a 114-75 victory over the Washington Wizards on Saturday. Mara’s contribution, which included his first career 3-pointer, helped the Thunder secure their fourth win despite several injuries to the team's starting frontcourt.
A Rookie Finding His Footing
The path for a rookie center in the NBA is rarely linear, often defined by a steep learning curve and the physical demands of defending the paint against seasoned professionals. Following the blowout win at the Paycom Center, Daigneault highlighted the specific challenges Mara has faced during his debut season.
“Aday’s done a great job, like we said last night. He’s been really consistent,” Daigneault told reporters. “He’s played impactful minutes every single night, which is hard to do for a rookie player, especially at that position.
It’s a hard position.”
Mara’s performance against the Wizards was his second career start, and he made the most of his opportunities on the floor.
He finished the game 8-for-10 from the field, adding eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocks to his 18-point total. This efficient output provided a necessary boost for a Thunder squad currently dealing with the absence of key starters Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, and Chet Holmgren.

The Thunder’s Resilient Rotation
The Thunder’s ability to maintain a winning record—now sitting at 8-2—during this injury-plagued stretch speaks to an all-hands-on-deck philosophy. Daigneault opted for a double-big starting lineup featuring Mara alongside Isaiah Hartenstein and veteran forward Kenrich Williams, a configuration that successfully stifled the Wizards’ offense.
While the defense held Washington to just 75 points, the offensive production was equally distributed.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 30 points, doing the bulk of his damage in the third quarter before sitting out the final frame. The bench unit provided support, with Jared McCain leading the reserves with 19 points. Other rookies also made their presence felt, as Ajay Mitchell contributed 12 points and Bennett Stirtz added 11 points and five rebounds.
Looking Toward Portland
The win over Washington marks a clear turnaround for the team after a brief two-game slide against the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks. By placing young players like Mara in high-pressure roles, the coaching staff is effectively stress-testing the roster depth.
The team now looks toward a road matchup against the Portland Blazers, scheduled for Tuesday.
For Mara, the challenge will be sustaining this level of production as the team transitions to a different environment and a new defensive scheme. The ability of the Thunder to rely on a diverse group of contributors remains the defining narrative of their early-season success.
