New Salem Children’s Center Hosts Inaugural Turkey Trot 5K Fundraiser

The New Salem Children’s Center in Petersburg, Illinois, is turning the pre-Thanksgiving season into a community fitness event.

According to details shared via DFW Running Talk, the center will host its inaugural Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run to raise funds for local facility upgrades.

The primary goal of the event is to finance the replacement of the ground covering on the center’s playground. Organizers aim to create a safer environment for children to play and explore by upgrading the existing surface material.

The race is scheduled for mid-November, providing a seasonal opportunity for families to participate in outdoor activity. Participants can pick up their race packets at two different intervals:

Turkey Trot 2026 Annoucement!
  • Friday, November 13: Time and location to be determined.
  • Saturday, November 14: 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM near the start/finish line.

Early bird registration remains a key incentive for participants. Those who register by October 25 are guaranteed to receive an event T-shirt.

The race features specific categories for runners, with organizers implementing rules to prevent “double dipping” in the age group awards. The awards are structured as follows:

Awards structure and incentives programs
Category Criteria
Overall Awards Top 1 Male & Top 1 Female (Gun Time)
Age Group Awards Top 1 Male & Top 1 Female (Net Time)

Age groups for the event are divided into the following brackets: 10 & Under, 11-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 & Over. Runners are encouraged to wear Thanksgiving or turkey-themed costumes, and the event will feature local food vendors and a photo booth.

Community events like this often serve as a vital fiscal bridge for non-profit child care centers, which frequently operate on thin margins. Replacing playground safety surfacing costs much capital, a common hurdle for these centers as they work to meet modern safety standards while maintaining affordability for local families.

By combining a competitive 5K with a family-oriented fun run, the New Salem Children’s Center is looking to maximize both participation and community engagement. The success of the event will be measured not just by the race times, but by the progress made toward the playground renovation project.
