Mr Ireland director Brendan Scully reports recruitment challenges

As the Mr England pageant recently scrambled to secure a dozen competitors just days before its deadline, facing what director Angie Beasley described as a shortage of shy and slow men, attention has pivoted across the Irish Sea to how the Mr Ireland competition is managing similar modern pressures.

Revival and Recruitment in the Modern Pageant Circuit

While Britain faced a last-minute scramble that required reigning Miss England Milla Magee to recruit at a Cornwall beach—ultimately bringing the participant count from a paltry seven up to 12—Mr Ireland director Brendan Scully reports a starkly different trajectory. According to an article by Kate Demolder, the nation’s search for male representatives has historically yielded strong international placements, including Kamal Ibrahim winning Mr World in 2010, Leo Delaney placing second a few years later, and Karl Bowe securing a role in the drama series Fair City.

Yet, organizers acknowledge that attracting applicants remains an uphill battle. Although Irish men have gained international visibility through actors like Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal—helping shift historic reputations regarding attractiveness—domestic hesitation persists. Glenn Williamson, who held the Mr Ireland title from 2023 to 2025 and first entered the contest in 2016, notes that public perception and stigma continue to hinder sign-ups.

It always takes Ireland a while to catch up with trends, and this [putting effort into loving yourself] is no different.
— Glenn Williamson, Mr Ireland 2023–2025

Williamson, who works coaching men to help them achieve their goals in life, confidence and, as of recently, dating and relationships, explained that his online content frequently attracts critical comments from domestic audiences. He noted that the reluctance stems largely from a fear of appearing self-absorbed.

Character, Community, and the Evolution of the Competition

To combat outdated stereotypes, organizers have intentionally reshaped the format of the contest. Scully points out that contemporary male pageants have evolved beyond aesthetic metrics into platforms centered on philanthropy, community advocacy, and public ambassadorship.

The selection process reflects this shift. Candidates aged 18 to 34 holding an Irish passport undergo a rigorous evaluation spanning four days. The assessment tests public speaking, debating, and athletic ability while requiring contestants to spearhead a social initiative project.

We’re looking to make a new Irish celebrity… As well as an ambassador for the charities we work with. Basically, someone we could see on television charming anyone that’s interviewing him.
— Brendan Scully, Mr Ireland Director

Scully highlights that because Mr World occurs only every two or three years, maintaining continuous momentum proves difficult. Organizers currently weigh expanding Mr Ireland into an annual event, which would allow winners to rotate between international fixtures such as Mr World and Mr Supranational.

For now, organizers continue urging prospective candidates to look past domestic hesitation. Williamson reflects on his multi-year journey to the title, noting that participation ultimately requires stepping outside established social norms, regardless of external commentary.
