Nintendo brings its iconic tropical hub back for the Switch 2 with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, launching on October 22, 2026. The 12-sport compilation combines returning classics like golf and bowling with new motion-controlled activities set on Wuhu Island, supported by upgraded 4K visuals at 60 frames per second.
Twenty years after the cultural phenomenon of Wii Sports first popularized motion gaming, Nintendo is revisiting the tropical setting that defined a generation of casual players. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort builds upon the groundwork laid by 2022’s Nintendo Switch Sports, taking advantage of the Switch 2 platform’s upgraded processing power and native Joy-Con 2 controllers to deliver sharper anti-aliased graphics and smoother motion tracking.
Wuhu Island Returns With Twelve Core and Leisure Activities
Unlike its predecessor, which launched with fewer sports before adding them through updates, the new title arrives with a full roster of 12 events right out of the box. Players can jump into nine competitive events—tennis, bowling, archery, boxing, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, golf, and thumb wrestling—alongside three distinct casual leisure sports: a propeller plane, skateboarding, and power cruising.
Archery stands out for its two-controller setup, where one Joy-Con holds the bow while the other pulls back the string to simulate launching an arrow. Meanwhile, thumb wrestling emerges as a surprising party favorite, relying on simple shake-offs and feints that turn a basic digital gesture into tense, tactical gameplay.
Both Sea Sprint (Power Cruising) and Skate Sprint (Skateboarding) challenge participants to complete a predetermined path as fast as possible to secure the best timing. Power Cruising’s Sea Sprint features lap-based racing infused with scattered Ring Boosts, whereas Skateboarding’s Skate Sprint functions as a traditional linear route featuring a distinct beginning and end. Using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls in Skateboarding, players can simulate pushing their board to build speed, letting them shred across Wuhu Island in competitive course races or in ultra-casual Free Play. Prop Plane’s Ball Battle challenges pilots to collect or steal the most floating balls, while players can tilt the controller to fly around freely. Players who conquer the upper tiers of any sport’s ranking will face off against formidable Island Champions, such as the returning Wii Sports Mii icon Matt.
Island Exploration and New Single-Player Progression
Beyond traditional match-ups, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort heavily emphasizes open exploration across Wuhu Island. Using the vehicle-based leisure sports, players can embark on Sightseeing Tours with a five-minute time limit to discover hidden landmarks, photograph Spocco items, and complete island missions ranging from popping balloons to finding hibiscus flowers. Between Archery rounds or Thumb Wrestling matches, players can routinely hop into their Prop Plane to fly around the island in search of more Sightseeing Logs, or visit other islanders while they compete on the tennis courts, archery ranges, and more.
The game also addresses a major critique of the previous Switch entry by introducing extensive single-player content. Players also earn Spocco Points and cosmetic rewards during both online sessions and offline play, unlocking avatar clothing, gear, and accessories through rotating gacha-style item stores without needing to spend real money.
