Denver Broncos All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II returned to full participation in Wednesday's practice in Englewood, Colorado, moving closer to a potential return for the Week 8 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. According to a report from the Denver Broncos, Surtain’s status improved after he had been limited in all three practices leading up to Week 7.
The news arrives as the Broncos prepare for a Week 8 game against the Chiefs, where having a cornerback like Surtain is important. Surtain has been sidelined since the Week 4 game against the San Francisco 49ers, missing the last three contests due to an ankle injury.
The road back from the Week 4 injury
The nature of Surtain’s absence was initially confusing for those watching the game. While it appeared he went down with a non-contact injury during the San Francisco game, Broncos Wire reported that the ankle damage actually occurred one play prior to the moment he finally collapsed on the field.
The Broncos’ front office made a strategic gamble by not placing Surtain on injured reserve (IR). As Broncos Wire noted, an IR designation would have forced the cornerback to miss at least four games, which would have mathematically ruled him out for the upcoming game against Kansas City. By keeping him on the active roster, the team left the door open for a Week 8 return.
Asked if he was close to playing today, #Broncos CB Pat Surtain II said, "Not really." He was listed as questionable with an ankle injury. Asked if he expects to play next Sunday against Kansas City, he said, "Possibly."
However, the path hasn’t been a straight line. Following a 30-16 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7, Surtain told the Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson that he wasn’t actually close to playing in that specific game.
A depleted defensive secondary
While the Surtain news provides a boost, the Broncos’ broader injury list includes other players who did not practice or were limited. The return of a star corner is offset by the continued absence of other key defensive pieces. Safety Talanoa Hufanga, who suffered an ankle injury during the Week 5 win over the Chargers, did not practice Wednesday and has already missed two games.
The defensive line and receiving corps are also feeling the strain. Defensive lineman Zach Allen (hamstring) and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (chest) both missed Wednesday’s session. Both players were active for the Week 7 win against Arizona, but their current status leaves the coaching staff with fewer options in the trenches and on the perimeter.
The Wednesday report showed a mix of progress and stagnation across the roster:
- Full Participants: Pat Surtain II (ankle), Malcolm Roach (neck), Karene Reid (elbow).
- Limited Participants: Garett Bolles (hip), Marvin Mims Jr. (ankle).
- Did Not Practice: Talanoa Hufanga (ankle), Zach Allen (hamstring), Jaylen Waddle (chest).
The tactical stakes against Kansas City
The significance of this report is that the Broncos’ ability to contain the Chiefs’ attack depends on who is lining up in the secondary. Without Surtain, the secondary must rely on depth players who lack his All-Pro status.
Some might argue that the Broncos’ Week 7 win over Arizona proves they can win without him.
The team is not yet ready to declare Surtain a “go” for Sunday. The Broncos are scheduled to release an additional practice report on Thursday, with the final official game statuses for Week 8 arriving on Friday.
