Patrick Graham Wins Inaugural Francis Bacon Lifetime Achievement Award

Dublin city centre is currently hosting the Dublin Gallery Weekend, a multi-day event that spans streets and venues across the capital to celebrate the influence of visual arts.

Organised by the Contemporary Art Gallery Association, the festival has designated artist Patrick Graham as the recipient of the inaugural Francis Bacon Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award ceremony took place at the Francis Bacon studio within the Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square. Patrick Graham, reflecting on the recognition, described the accolade as “fantastic.” He further remarked, “I’m stunned as it’s very difficult to accept in a way that you’re worthy of an award,” adding, “I’m not being over modest, but it was really stunning” because Francis Bacon is a “real hero” of his.

Dr. Barbara Dawson, Director of the Hugh Lane Gallery and a judge for the prize, emphasized the necessity of the award. “We have great prizes for literature, but the visual arts need their own awards and their own recognition which is now happening with this marvellous prize,” she stated, as reported by RTE.ie.

Beyond the award, the gallery is currently undergoing a significant refurbishment project. Dr. Dawson noted that the team is “excited” as building works progress on the 1930s wing. “It’s going to be a fantastic project with what we call the 1930s wing in the Hugh Lane Gallery going to be refurbished with environmental controls and lighting to 21st century standards,” she said. She also highlighted that the project includes a new city library adjacent to the gallery, connected by a link that will serve as a “game changer for Parnell Square.”

The festival encompasses a wide circle of galleries throughout the city, including Taylor Galleries, The Solomon Gallery, Green on Red, and Hillsboro. Jessica Taylor of the Taylor Galleries expressed enthusiasm for the event, noting that it serves as a highlight for the members of the Contemporary Art Gallery Association. “It really is a celebration of art, in all its form and we are so excited that people will be coming into the city centre for four days with events happening everywhere,” she said.

Addressing the potential hesitation some visitors might feel, she added, “We know that knocking on the door of one of the Georgian buildings galleries can seem daunting, but we are so welcoming and so pleased to invite everyone in, so just come on in and say hi.”

Dr. John Daly, Chair of the Contemporary Art Gallery Association and owner of the Hillsboro Gallery, encouraged public engagement with the city’s art scene. “When you enter any of the galleries in Dublin, you will always be met with a warm welcome friendly face,” he said. “There is nothing more we love than talking about art, introducing people to artists and letting them explore the city through the visual arts.”

Dublin Gallery Weekend features a program of walking tours, talks, and original exhibitions, intended to bring the city’s walls to life throughout the scheduled days.
