Portland Timbers Open 2027 Sprint Season Against San Jose
The Portland Timbers will kick off their 17th Major League Soccer campaign on Saturday, February 20, hosting the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park, timbers.com reported. The opening match marks the start of a newly structured 14-game Sprint Season presented by Toyota.
During this fast-paced competition, every MLS club faces its 14 conference opponents once. Teams play seven matches at home and seven on the road. The format launches the league’s transition into a summer-to-spring calendar.
For longtime captain Diego Chara, the 2027 campaign will be his final MLS season. The Colombian midfielder signed as the club’s first Designated Player in 2011. He has since guided the Timbers to an MLS Cup title in 2015, three Western Conference Championship trophies, and the 2020 MLS Is Back Tournament championship. To honor his tenure, the Timbers are running a seven-match collectible pin series, giving the first 10,000 fans at each home match a unique pin to complete the set.
Key Cascadia Matchups and Decision Day
Portland’s schedule features traditional regional rivalries early in the spring. The Timbers travel to Lumen Field to face Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, April 3. Two weeks later, they return home to host Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Providence Park on Saturday, April 17.
The regular season concludes with Decision Day 2027 on Saturday, May 8, when Portland hosts LAFC at Providence Park. All Western Conference matches kick off at 5 p.m. PT on Apple TV. Results from these matches determine the playoff seedings.
Following Decision Day, the top eight teams in each conference advance to the Audi 2027 MLS Cup Playoffs. The postseason uses a single-elimination bracket format within each conference. The Eastern and Western Conference champions will then meet in the 2027 MLS Cup on Memorial Day Weekend. Beyond the domestic title, the Sprint Season also determines qualification for the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and 2028 Leagues Cup.
Annual memberships and Sprint Season tickets are currently available through the club’s official site, with additional ticket packages releasing in the coming weeks. Every match of the season streams on Apple TV with no blackouts.
