NFC South Division Standings After Week 8 Bye Week
The New Orleans Saints emerged from their Week 8 bye week sitting just 1.5 games out of first place in the NFC South, benefitting from the stumbles of their division rivals while resting. Across the division, every team is currently underperforming preseason expectations, making the NFC South the only NFL division without a team holding a winning record as November begins.
Things broke favorably for the Saints during their time off. While New Orleans rested, the Carolina Panthers dropped a 27-19 road game to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football, a loss that prompted the franchise to fire defensive coordinator Ejero Eviro. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons squandered their own chance to seize first place, getting shut out entirely in a 16-0 defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The current state of the four-team race:
- Carolina Panthers: 3-4 (178 points scored, 193 points allowed)
- Atlanta Falcons: 3-4 (171 points scored, 173 points allowed)
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 2-5 (162 points scored, 151 points allowed).
- New Orleans Saints: 2-5 (162 points scored, 194 points allowed)
Roster Realities and Coaching Adjustments Ahead
For New Orleans, the path forward requires immediate adjustments on the field and the sideline. Head coach Kellen Moore used the bye week to self-scout persistent vulnerabilities, such as leaving his backup left tackle isolated against elite pass rushers and leaning more heavily into the personnel packages that generated success in the run game.
While the Saints boast standout individual talents like quarterback Tyler Shough and wide receiver Chris Olave, the team simultaneously carries the division’s worst defense and arguably the worst offensive line. Relief could soon arrive on the health front. First-round pick Jordyn Tyson and running back Travis Etienne are expected back from injured reserve soon, with left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. potentially returning for the stretch run of the schedule.
Despite playing poorly through the first seven weeks, the team remains firmly in the hunt. Because the NFC South isn’t good enough to qualify a wild-card playoff team, winning the division stands as the sole viable ticket to the postseason.
Week 9 Matchups and the Division Race
The race tightens immediately in Week 9. The Saints return home to host a 5-3 Cleveland Browns squad that has yet to win a single game by more than four points. Elsewhere on the slate, the Atlanta Falcons travel to Spain to face the Cincinnati Bengals, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers square off against the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football. Earlier that afternoon, Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos face the Carolina Panthers.

Those results create a clear path for New Orleans. A victory coupled with a Carolina loss would pull the Saints into a 3-5 tie, placing control of the division directly within reach.
