Three wins in a row and an unbeaten four-game stretch have completely transformed the Western Conference playoff picture for the Portland Timbers, who surged past visiting Houston Dynamo FC 3-1 at Providence Park.
Vincent Janssen orchestrated the victory with a stellar performance, tallying a goal and two assists, while Kristoffer Velde and David Da Costa each contributed a goal and an assist. The result vaults Portland above the playoff line into eighth place with just a single regular-season match remaining.
The Battle for Survival on Decision Day
With 43 points and a 12-14-7 record, the Timbers find themselves locked in an extraordinarily tight race where a mere three points separate six different teams sitting between seventh and 12th place. Every single one of those clubs is fighting for the final three postseason berths available in the conference.

Portland completed its 17-game home schedule with a 9-4-4 mark at Providence Park, having outscored visiting opponents 37-28 on their home turf while finding the back of the net in 15 of those 17 matches. That consistent home scoring output has built a foundation, but the final hurdle requires traveling on the short week.
Next up is the regular-season finale against Austin FC at Q2 Stadium on Decision Day, November 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Pacific, with all Western Conference matches starting simultaneously.
Inside the Providence Park Scoring Surge
The home side wasted little time establishing control Sunday night. In the 25th minute, Janssen slipped a clever pass through the Houston backline directly into the left side of the box. Da Costa took a sharp touch onto his left foot and roofed a powerful shot into the top of the net for his seventh goal of the campaign.

Portland doubled its advantage in the 65th minute. Janssen launched a long ball from the center of the pitch over the top, finding Velde in stride. Velde drove into the box and clinically finished into the bottom right corner, registering his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Houston briefly answered in the 71st minute when Agustín Bouzat collected a pass at the top of the penalty box and drilled a left-footed shot past the defense. However, Janssen sealed the three points in the 78th minute. Da Costa delivered an accurate corner kick from the left side, and Janssen met it squarely with a header in the middle of the six-yard box.
The offensive explosion pushes Portland’s season goal total to 60, tying the third-most prolific scoring season in the club’s MLS history and ranking them second overall in the Western Conference. Finn Surman was named the Supporters’ Player of the Year for a second straight season.
