Springfield College and Salve Regina University faced off in women’s volleyball, producing a tightly contested box score filled with scoring runs, substitutions, and critical service errors.
Springfield and Salve Regina Trade Early Points
The match opened with Springfield claiming the first point off a kill by Sydney Hanlon, assisted by Kate Andy. Salve Regina quickly answered as the teams traded early side-outs and service miscues. Gabbie Weissgarber landed a service ace for Springfield against Anouk Jansen, but a subsequent service error kept Salve within striking distance at 2-2.
Rotations began early for both squads. Salve Regina brought in Kalena Stavish and Jenna DeFrancesco, a move that immediately paid off when Ahunna James hammered down a kill off a delivery from Delaney McGee to put Salve ahead 3-2.
Springfield’s Mid-Set Surge
Karenna Allain swung the momentum back for Springfield during a dominant service rotation. Allain tallied multiple service aces against the Salve defense, forcing a defensive scramble that resulted in a bad set by Stavish and subsequent kills by Jodi Saelua and Delaney McGee. Salve called on Saige Freitas-Rogers to stabilize the back row, but Springfield extended their lead to 9-3 following an attack error by James.
The scoring slowed as both teams capitalized on opponent errors. Aubrey Henney anchored a Springfield block to stymie a Salve attack, while Lily Dobbins rotated back into the lineup for Salve Regina to spark an offensive reset.
Salve Regina Claws Back Late
Trailing through the middle frames, Salve Regina mounted a steady comeback behind the passing of Stavish and the attacking of Lauren Shurling and Jenna DeFrancesco. Shurling connected on multiple kills from McGee and Stavish feeds, narrowing Springfield’s advantage.
Errors continued to dictate stretches of play as both teams struggled with service depth. A service error by Salve’s Gracy Spirito handed Springfield a 20-15 edge, but DeFrancesco and Shurling answered with quick strikes to keep the pressure high.
Closing Exchanges
Down the stretch, Springfield utilized deep bench contributions, including kills from Alexa Bonato and Maliha Daubon. Despite late scores from Salve Regina fueled by Kate Andy’s distribution, Springfield maintained control. An attack error by Anouk Jansen off an Andy assist eventually pushed the score to 18-23, capped moments later by a kill from Daubon.
