Santa Monica Studio Delays God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027

Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey, its PlayStation 5 spin-off starring Kratos’ late wife Faye, moving the release from February 16, 2027 to May 20, 2027. The studio announced the change on X on November 4, 2026, saying the extra months will let the team put the finishing touches on the game and push it to its fullest potential.

Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in our studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans. With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential. On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we’ll be back to share more updates soon!

Faye’s Adventure in the Everywhen

Sony announced the game at the June 2026 State of Play after leaks pointed to a new project from the studio behind Ragnarök. Santa Monica offered a 20-minute showcase at the June State of Play.

Players control Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, whose death just before the opening of God of War (2018) kickstarted that story. Deborah Ann Woll returns to voice her.

Why February 2027 Got Crowded

The delay also gives the game room to breathe. February’s window became exceptionally crowded, with Fable pivoting from a fall 2026 slot to early 2027 to avoid the blast zone of GTA 6. Other heavyweights in that window include Metro 2039, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival and Final Fantasy 14: Evercold.

Sony’s own calendar added to the pile: Until Dawn 2 lands January 28 and the annual MLB The Show typically drops in March, and the push guarantees at least one first-party PlayStation release in the spring quarter of 2027.

Pre-Orders Were Already Strong

This marks the first delay for God of War Laufey. Pre-orders went live on September 29, a few months after the announcement, and fans have largely backed the delay, wanting a fully finished product.

One report notes it remains unclear whether the box shifts, since it does not include the game itself, while another says both the standard and collector’s pre-orders should now arrive on May 20, 2027.

Santa Monica’s Other Projects

God of War Laufey will be one of the biggest games of 2027, continuing the story Sony Santa Monica set in motion back in 2018. This is not the studio’s first delay — Ragnarök was pushed from 2021 to 2022 and went on to be a strong entry. This delay is much shorter.

Santa Monica is juggling several projects at once: the God of War Trilogy Remake and a new Kratos-led God of War game from director Cory Barlog, both actively in development alongside Laufey.

Next Glimpse Before May 20, 2027

The studio has promised to share more updates soon. The next glimpse could come at The Game Awards, or at a new State of Play before the end of the year or very early in 2027. Until then, the launch date stands: May 20, 2027, on PlayStation 5.
